The invention relates to a method for the continuous precipitation and recovery of water-dilutable paint materials from the circulating water of spray booths by electro-precipitation in a direct-current circuit. The continuously precipitated and discharged paint materials, consisting of binder components, pigments and, if appropriate, auxiliary solvents, may, after being recombined with the neutralizing agent precipitated on the counter- electrode, be returned to the painting process again, whilst the purified circulating water is led back into the spray booth in a closed circuit. The advantages of the method are the possibility of full utilization of the overspray which unavoidably occurs, the avoidance of the hitherto customary coagulation of the overspray by means of precipitated chemicals and the associated problem of the disposal of non-utilizable paint sludge as well as the avoidance of waste water pollution due to the disposal of waste water from spray booths.

The invention relates to a modification of the process described in the parent patent No. 379602 for preparing crosslinking components for coating-material binders which, due to their structure, can be crosslinked by transesterification. According to the parent patent, compounds of the structure X-CH2-COOR, preferably diesters of malonic acid, are reacted with a carbonyl compound in a Knoevenagel reaction, and the reaction product is polymerized to give an oligomeric or polymeric compound having a molecular weight of from 300 to 6000. In the present embodiment, the starting materials used for the Knoevenagel reaction comprise partial transesterification or transamidation products of the compound of the formula X-CH2-COOR with polyols or with polyamines.

Durch dieses Verfahren ist ein kontrollierbarer Einbau der die Viskosität und die Löslichkeit der Bindemittel beeinflussenden Molekülsegmente möglich. The invention relates to a process for the preparation of cathodically depositable paint binders based on polyoxyalkylene-modified epoxy resin-amine adducts, the modifying component being incorporated by reaction of the epoxy resin-amine adduct containing only tertiary amino groups and primary hydroxyl groups with polyoxyalkylene glycidyl ethers. This method enables a controllable incorporation of the molecular segments influencing the viscosity and the solubility of the binders.

The invention relates to a process for the preparation of aqueous emulsions of air-drying paint (surface coating, lacquer) binders based on modified alkyd resins. From 25 to 50% by weight of a fatty acid-modified alkyd resin having an oil content of from 30 to 60% by weight, a polyethylene glycol (PEG) content of from 6 to 16% by weight, an acid number of from 30 to 60 mg of KOH/g, essentially based on the carboxyl groups of from 10 to 20% by weight of trimellitic anhydride, a hydroxyl number of from 20 to 100 mg of KOH/g and a limiting viscosity number (intrinsic viscosity) [ eta ] of from 6 to 8 ml/g (DMF/20 DEG C) are reacted with from 75 to 50% by weight of an acid-free, fatty acid-modified alkyd resin having an oil content of from 15 to 60% by weight, an acid number of less than 3 mg of KOH/g, a hydroxyl number of from 30 to 150 mg of KOH/g and a limiting viscosity number [ eta ] of from 7 to 10 ml/g (DMF/20 DEG C) by esterification or joint reaction with a diisocyanate until the limiting viscosity number [ eta ] has risen by from 1 to 4 units. The binder, after neutralisation by means of bases and addition of small amounts of organic auxiliary solvents, is emulsified in water. The binder systems have a low content of bases and give paints having excellent processing and technical properties.
