This valve may have a tongue portion which is secured by one side, with the securing point for this blade valve located in the cooling circuit. The cooling ducting (26-33) around the valve may extend over more than 360 deg. and pass through more than one level inside the cylinder head.

The stepped piston for a compressor is made in two parts connected by bolts (20). The upper part (1) has the larger diameter and has clearance holes (18) for the bolts. The heads of the bolts fit in recesses in the top without projecting. The lower parts of the bolts screw into blind holes in the bottom part (2). The bottom of the upper part has a bored recess (3) into which the top (4) of the bottom part fits for accurate centering. A seal (3') is provided between the abutting faces. Both parts incorporate oil channels (19, 16, 17) which also include the clearance hole (18) in the top part to allow lubricant to flow from outside the top to a bearing (6) inside the bottom.

A method is provided for detecting abnormal combustion phenomena in an internal combustion engine and a device for implementing such method according to which a parameter characterizing the combustion is detected by means of a sensor, preferably a light sensor. To distinguish between the abnormal phenomena and the normal phenomena of the combustion, the signal filtered from the point of view of its symmetry with respect to an immaginery symmetry axis passing by the maximum point of the signal is analyzed. If the signal is not symmetrical with respect to such axis, an identification signal of an abnormal combustion is provided. To implement such method, a symmetry pulse is generated which marks the occurence of the signal maximum. As a function of this pulse, two values are produced, one characterizing the profile of the signal before the maximum and the other one characterizing the profile of the signal after the maximum, and those values are compared between each other.
