A microparticle which comprises an acid with two or more acid groups and an organic base. The microparticle may have a particle size of 0.5-10 microns, and a molar ratio of acid groups to basic groups of 0.6-1.4:1. The acid may comprise bis-aliphatic acid, brassylic acid, sebacic acid, azelaic acid or a bis-carboxylic fatty acid in which the terminal carboxylic acids are linked by a region which is hydrophobic. The acid groups may also be separated by a saturated or unsaturated aliphatic chain; or substituted saturated, or unsaturated aliphatic chain. Self-assembled microparticles with a multi-lamellar structure, comprising an acid with two or more acid groups and an organic base where the molar ratio of acid to basic groups is from 0.6 to 1.4:1. The microparticle may be 0.5-10 microns in size, and the acid may comprise a bis-acid. The microparticles can be used as a particulate support and can be obtained by contacting a bis-acid and organic base in a hydrophilic solvent, wherein the acid is insoluble/sparingly soluble, and the base is soluble. Preferably, the hydrophilic solvent comprises an aqueous solution or a water-in-oil emulsion. The acid can comprise a bis-carboxylic fatty acid with terminal carboxylic acids linked by a hydrophobic region.
