PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a device for operating a particle filter arranged in an exhaust region of an internal combustion engine for preventing the particle filter device from being damaged due to very high particle combustion speed to a non-allowable extent and very high particle filter temperature to a non-allowable extent. SOLUTION: In this method for operating the particle filter 14 arranged in the exhaust region 13 of the internal combustion engine 10 to measure scale for particle combustion speed in order to adjust and/or monitor particle combustion speed or adjust/or monitor particle filter temperature TPF, flow rate of secondary air (mSL) is blown onto the upstream side in front of the particle filter 14 in the exhaust region 13 and is adjusted as function of measuring scale for particle combustion speed. The flow rate of secondary air (mSL) can be enriched by flow rate of oxygen (mO2) or flow rate of nitrogen (nN2) supplied from an air separation device 22.
