Gas is obtained from a hydrocarbon liquid, and allowed to equilibrate in closed container 2. The composition of a sample of equilibrated gas is analysed and used in determining true vapour pressure (TVP). The gas may comprise light hydrocarbons and inert gases. A hydrocarbon fluid stream comprising a mixture of the gas and liquid may be separated in the container. Gas may be obtained by expanding the liquid in the container by decreasing the pressure or changing the temperature. Two portions of liquid may be expanded and equilibrated to obtain two gas samples having different vapour/liquid ratios. TVP may be determined based on the measured compositions of the two samples. Temperature and/or pressure of the equilibrated gas may be measured by sensors 14 and used in determining TVP. An algorithm relating TVP with gas composition, and perhaps temperature or pressure, may be used. Gas analysis may be by a gas chromatograph 4.

A third stage where the under-saturated gas stream is used to strip water from a lean desiccant such as glycol using a mixer 30 and separator 32. A fourth stage drying the resultant gas stream to a first water content level using a cooler 38, mixer 40 and separator 44. A fifth stage using the stripped desiccant to further dry the gas stream to a second lower water content level, the stage including a cooler 52, mixer 54 and a separator 58.
