A data processing system has several processors of different types, such as a central processing unit (CPU) and a graphics processing unit (GPU). Each processor has a cache for data from the main memory. Cache consistency operations are used to ensure that data in the cache of one processor can be correctly accessed by other processors. Tasks T1â T7, without data dependencies, are scheduled for one of the processors. All the consistency operations C1â C7 for a task are executed before a task starts. The consistency operations for one task are performed while another task is being executed. The data dependencies of the tasks may be re-evaluated after the execution of a task. The tasks may be split into sub-tasks without data dependencies. The first task may be selected to minimise the initial latency due to its consistency operations.

In a microprocessor system, typically a Graphics Processing Units (GPU 3, fig. 1), one or more processing cores (4, fig. 1), execute plural execution threads in parallel. A task manager issues tasks to the processing cores and an exception handler handles threads that encounter exceptions during their execution. At least one of the processing cores can trigger an exception event to the task manager if a thread it is executing encounters or wishes to generate an exception 50, 51, 52. If the task manager receives an indication of an exception event from a processing core it broadcasts 53 a cause exception message to at least one of the processing cores. If a processing core receives such a broadcast message it identifies any threads that the core is currently executing to which the message applies and redirects 54 any such identified threads to the exception handler for handling 55, e.g. terminate, suspend, resume or store trace and/or state data.
