NOVEL METHOD FOR PREPARING SOLID SOLUTION MATERIALS FOR SECONDARY NON-AOUEOUS BATTERIES Lithiated manganese oxides are synthesized using a novel two stage process. Using appropriate starting materials, lithiation is accomplished via low temperature ion exchange in aqueous warm salt solution. A heating stage follows which completes the synthesis. Materials suitable for use as cathodes in lithium ion rechargeable batteries have been prepared in this way. Novel materials might also be prepared using this process.

PURPOSE: To obtain a chemically homogeneous compound, and provide a battery having large capacitance and the large cycle service life by manufacturing a solid solution, using ion exchange reaction at a low temperature. CONSTITUTION: In a formula AxByMOz, A and B represent an element selected from a group composed of H, Li, Na, K, Cs, Ca, Mg, Rb and a mixture of these, and (x) represented 0 to 2, and (y) represents 0 to 2, and (z) represents 1.5 to 3, and M represents an element selected from a group composed of Mn, Fe, Ni, Co, V, Cr, Sc and a mixture of these. When this solid solution is manufactured, a starting solid solution which has a desired molecular skeleton structure composed of salt of Ay'MOz↓' and B and has the A and B and on which y↓' and x↓' having the dame range as (y and z) but are not necessarily the same number, for example, γ-MnOOH is selected.
