The flights (36) rotate from a retracted position generally parallel to a top conveying surface on the conveyor belt (10) to an extended position standing up and away from the top surface. In one version of the flight (36), a distal edge of the flight is bent downward into a cavity (24) in the top surface of the belt when the flight (36) is retracted. In another version, rollers at the distal end of the flight extend upstream of the distal edge of the flight. The flight rollers are rotated when the flight is retraced to lift and propel conveyed articles over the edges of the flight. Thus, both flights avoid snagging articles with discontinuous bottoms.

The diverting rollers (28) in the first belt (12) direct the article (10) toward the second belt (14). The rollers (28) in the second belt (14) direct the article toward a side of the second belt (14). An article lying on both belts simultaneously rotates by the action of the two sets of diverting rollers acting on opposite ends of the article. The orientation of the rollers and their rotation maintain the leading edge of the article.
