Bottles &c., non-refillable.-The bottle &c. has a liquid-discharge chamber 1 provided centrally with a pipe 2, secured in the neck by cork &c. 3, and providing at its upper end a seat for a spring- controlled valve 8. The discharge chamber is provided with a depending socket 5, screw-threaded at its lower end to receive a fixing-nut 6. In the wall of the tube 2 is formed an air passage 12, provided at its lower end with a spring-controlled valve, and terminating at its upper end in an annular chamber 14, through which it communicates, by means of a spring-controlled valve 19, with an annular air-tight chamber 22, connected to the atmosphere by an air-passage 23 provided with a screw-threaded nipple 24 covered by a cap 25 having lateral holes 26. The chamber 14 is surrounded by a glass ring 15, and contains perineable materials, some soluble, such as salt or sugar, and others insoluble, such as cotton-wool, silk noils, peat, or colouring - matters. On the inside wall of the chamber 14, the word 'fraud ' may be printed or secured, and this will become visib'e through windows in a sealing-cap placed right over the bottle mouth when an attempt at refilling results in the solution of the materials in the chamber. To empty the bottle, it is inverted and an air ball or pump is attached to the nipple 25, air being pumped in to raise the valve 16 and create sufficient internal pressure to enable the liquid to open the valve 8. Soap holders. -A cake Z of soap is suspended from the end of a chain T, which is wound on a drum D by the action of a spiral spring E. The drum is enclosed in a casing B, having an opening G through which the chain passes. In order that the pull of the spring shall not interfere with the use of the soap, this opening G has a narrow slot V, Fig. 4, at each side, so that a slight lateral displacement causes one of the links to engage in one of the slots V. The soap Z is held between two disks S, K, by a toothed rod R, passing through the soap into a tubular stem M, where it is held by projections 0 on the spring tongues N. When the soap has been completely used up, the projections 0--are disengaged by means of a sliding sleeve L.

Spring-drum apparatus for adjustable suspension.-Spring reels for carrying conductors for lamps, or other apparatus, which can be carried in ceiling or wall roses, are constructed with a drum 2 containing a spiral spring 3, one end of which is attached to the drum and the other to a central spindle 4 whereby the device is carried when the screwed stem is placed in the socket 5. The insulated cable 7 is carried between two cheeks 6, and, passing over a pulley 9 and down a helical guide of metal, glass, or pottery, which may, if desired, be replaced by a series of rollers and serves as a brake for the cable, descends through a ring 18 to the lamp or like fitting L. A cord or chain 19, provided with a hook or buckle 20, allows the cable to be pulled and fixed out of the vertical, and in a fitting as described the tension of the spring is so adjusted that the conductor is wound up or down according as the lamp is lifted or lowered, a stop being placed at any desired point of the cable.
