A system for tissue approximation and fixation is described herein. A device is advanced in a minimally invasive manner within a patient's body to create one or several divisions or plications within a hollow body organ. The system comprises a stapler assembly having a tissue acquisition member and a tissue fixation member. The stapler assembly approximates tissue from within the hollow body organ with the acquisition member and then affixes the approximated tissue with the fixation member. In one method, the system can be used as a secondary procedure to reduce the size of a stoma within the hollow body organ. 1. A surgical method , comprising:translumenally advancing a flexible elongate shaft having a vacuum chamber at a distal end thereof into a stomach of a patient;applying a vacuum force through the vacuum chamber to adhere stomach tissue to the vacuum chamber; andwith the tissue adhered to the vacuum chamber, moving the vacuum chamber relative to the shaft in a direction transverse to a longitudinal axis of the shaft to form a fold in the stomach tissue.2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the vacuum chamber is located in a pod at the distal end of the shaft claim 1 , and moving the vacuum chamber relative to the shaft comprises moving the pod relative to the shaft in the direction transverse to the longitudinal axis of the shaft.3. Devices and methods for performing vascular anastomosis. A needle passer is used to pass one or more needles through tissue to thread one or more lengths of suture through the tissue. The needle passer is operable using one hand and includes a handle supporting a shaft assembly carrying first and second sets of needles connected by lengths of suture. An actuator assembly uncovers the first set of needles, moves them into a radially extended position, and then passes them through tissue, for example, the wall of a patient's aorta. The needle passer may be pistol-shaped with a trigger that is moved in one direction to sequentially uncover, radially extend, and move the first set of needles through the aorta around an aortotomy. The needles may then be pulled away from the patient to thread the suture through the tissue. A delivery device is used to deliver a member adapted to be secure to body tissue, such as a vascular conduit. The delivery device includes a shaft and a collar mounted for relative movement. The shaft supports a vascular conduit so that an end of the conduit is disposed against the collar. A sealing element may be positioned on the collar beneath the end of the conduit. The needles in the second set are removed from the needle passer and are placed through the conduit and sealing element and into the collar. The shaft is then moved through the collar to move the vascular conduit along the suture into contact with the aorta. The delivery device is then removed and the respective ends of each suture length secured to fix the end of the vascular conduit to the aorta.

The present invention is devices, and methods for performing vascular anastomosis. A needle passer (100) is used to pass one or more needles through tissue to thread one or more lengths of suture (112) through the tissue. The needle passer (100) is operable using one hand, and includes a handle (102) supporting a shaft assembly (104) carrying first, and second sets of needles (110, 114) connected by lengths of suture (112). An actuator assembly (106) uncovers the first set of needles (110), moves them into a radially extended portion, and passes them through tissue. The needle passer (100) may be pistol shaped with a trigger (108). A delivery device (300) is used to deliver a vascular conduit (c) adapted tp be secured to body tissue. A delivery device includes a shaft (302) and a collar (304). A sealing element (306) may be positioned on the collar beneath the end of the conduit.

A system for tissue approximation and fixation is described herein. A device is advanced in a minimally invasive manner within a patient's body to create one or several divisions or plications within a hollow body organ. The system comprises a stapler assembly having a tissue acquisition member and a tissue fixation member. The stapler assembly approximates tissue from within the hollow body organ with the acquisition member and then affixes the approximated tissue with the fixation member. In one method, the system can be used as a secondary procedure to reduce the size of a stoma within the hollow body organ.
