A cleaner head for a vacuum cleaner comprises a hollow brush bar 14 mounted for rotation about an axis A. The brush bar 14 is driven by a motor 16 housed inside the hollow brush bar 14, the motor forming part of a drive assembly supported at one end of the cleaner head. The brush bar 14 is arranged to fit around the motor 16 like a sleeve thereby allowing removal of the brush bar 14 from the cleaner head by sliding the brush bar 14 along the axis A and out through an opening at the opposite end of the cleaner head. The brush bar 14 is rotatably supported in clearance around the drive assembly by a first bearing 28, which bearing 28 engages the brush bar 14 in a corresponding axial-sliding fit to allow said sliding removal of the brush bar 14.

A cleaner head 1 comprises a main body 2 having an agitator chamber (10, fig 4), an axle (21, fig 4) that extends into the chamber (10, fig 4), a bearing assembly 5 mounted on the axle (21, fig 4), a biasing member 6 and an agitator 8 rotatably mounted within the chamber (10, fig 4). The bearing assembly 5 is moveable along the axle (21, fig 4) between a first position (fig 6) and a second position (fig 5). The biasing member 6 biases the bearing assembly 5 towards the first position and the agitator 8 which is mounted on the bearing assembly 5, pushes the bearing assembly against the biasing member 6 towards the second position. The biasing member 6 is preferably a coil spring. The arrangement reduces noise and vibrations.

The present invention relates to a cleaner head for a vacuum cleaner. The cleaner head has a dirty-air inlet (14, fig 2) provided in a main suction chamber 20 of the cleaner head, an outlet duct 22 extending from the main suction chamber 20 for connection to a suction source, and a rotating brush bar 24 housed inside the main suction chamber 20 for agitating a floor surface contacted through the dirty-air inlet (14, fig 2). The brush bar 24 is driven by an air-cooled motor 28 housed inside a hollow section of the brush bar 24, the motor 28 having an air intake and an air exhaust fluidly connected to one another to form an air cooling path through the inside of the motor 24. The air intake is connected to a clean air inlet (48, fig 1) on the cleaner head and the air exhaust is fluidly connected to the outlet duct 22 by an exhaust duct 54 which bypasses the main suction chamber.

A cleaner head for a vacuum cleaner comprises a hinged soleplate assembly 7 which can be opened and closes to allow access to the inside of the cleaning head 5. The soleplate assembly 7 is held in a closed position by a release catch 19a, 19b on the cleaner head with the catch 19a, 19b being arranged to pivot between a locking position and a release position. The catch 19a, 19b includes a first cam (25, fig 9a) which is arranged to force open the hinged soleplate assembly 7 as the catch 19a, 19b is pivoted from the locking position to the release position. A second cam (27, fig 9a) may be present to engage the soleplate assembly 7 or the housing 5 to pull together the housing 5 and the soleplate assembly 7 as the catch 19a, 19b is rotated from the release position back to the lock position.

A cleaning appliance comprises a cleaner head 1 rotatably attached to a duct 61. The cleaner head 1 comprises a main body having an agitator chamber, an axle (21, fig 4) that extends into the chamber, a drive assembly (7, fig 4) mounted on the axle (21, fig 4), and an agitator (2, fig 4) rotatably mounted within the agitator chamber so as to surround the drive assembly (7, fig 4). The drive assembly (7, fig 4) is coupled to the agitator (2, fig 4) such that torque generated by the drive assembly (7, fig 4) is transmitted to the agitator (2, fig 4). A cleaner-head for a vacuum cleaner comprises a housing 5, the housing 5 being connected to a hinged soleplate assembly 7 which can be opened and closed to provide access to the inside of the housing 5. In accordance with the invention, the soleplate assembly 7 is a clip-on assembly which a user can manually un­clip from the housing 5, as required, to detach the soleplate assembly 7 for separate cleaning or replacement. The soleplate assembly 7 preferably includes a first hinge part (19, fig 7) and the housing comprises a second hinge part (21, fig 7), the two hinge parts (19, 21, fig 7) being arranged so that a user can clip them together to hinge the soleplate assembly 7 on the housing 5 and then subsequently unclip them as required.
