Scanner housing 12 comprises a back wall 30, side walls 26, 28, a transparent platen 16 and a support 40, movable relative to a wall 26 between a stowed position and a deployed, extended position. A portion 42 of document support 40 is mounted for relative sliding movement with bottom wall 24 of housing 12. When extended, support 40 has a surface 52 to support an oversize object, such as a book (60, Figure 3) being scanned. As shown in Figure 4, each sliding parallel support leg (72) may comprise an elongated slot (80) receiving a guide post (82) projected from base wall 24. Alternatively, support legs 42 may slide between guides (54, Figure 2) on the lower wall, and have movement limiting tabs and stops (56, 58: Figure 2). Scanner wall 26 may be recessed to receive upright part 48 of support 40 when retracted.

A scanning device scan carriage 12 is located within a housing 18 and moveable along a displacement path. A carriage drive belt 40, having a belt tensioning system 44, moves the carriage 12 along the displacement path. When necessary, for example when the scanner device is to be transported or shipped, a control system acts to move the carriage 12 - via motor 42 - to a stowed position 48. The location of this stowed or secure position 48 is such that a force exerted on the carriage 12, along the displacement path, is not directed or transmitted to drive belt tensioning system 44. Specifically, in the stowed position 48, forces on carriage 12 are resisted respectively by (a) stop 54 and (b) the resistence offered by drive motor 42. Thus, when the carriage is stowed, the tensioning system 44 is effectively isolated from forces on the carriage 12.

Method and apparatus for securing a flatbed scanner carriage

A system and method for securing a moveable scanner device within a scanning system comprises a housing having a transparent platen provided thereon. The scanner device is operatively associated with the housing and is moveable along a displacement path. A drive system comprising a drive belt connected to the scanner device and a tensioning system operatively associated with the drive belt moves the scanner device along the displacement path. A control system operatively associated with the drive system actuates the drive system to move the scanner device to a stowed position along the displacement path, the location of the stowed position being such that a force exerted on the scanner device and directed along the displacement path is not transmitted to the drive belt tensioning system.
