Method of virtually tagging baggage in a handling system, comprising: from an image, computing a first unique data signature from physical properties of the baggage S5-1 to S5-7; determining whether the first data signature passes a uniqueness threshold S5-9, S5-11; if the threshold is not met, an operator is prompted to modify the baggage’s appearance S5-13 and the aforementioned steps repeated to determine a second data signature; if the first or second signatures pass the uniqueness threshold they are incorporated into a unique virtual luggage tag.
