A push button release mechanism for coupling together two portions of a tool, such as pliers. The push button release mechanism can include a push button and one or more balls pushed in a radially-outward direction by geometry of the push button to pivotally couple the two portions together. The balls are normally pushed outward by an engagement portion. Depressing a push button head axially downward causes the balls to align with a receiving portion, which allows the balls to descend into the interior of the mechanism. The push button release mechanism is also threadably coupled with a threaded opening of one of the portions. The threaded opening can have deformed threads to increase the retention torque required to rotate the push button release mechanism. 1. The retaining ring opposes off-axis force when the ratchet head is experiencing cantilever-type loads, such that the body of the ratchet head absorbs the force rather than the cover plate enclosing the head. With the ratchet head assembled with the retaining ring opposing off-axis force, rather than the cover plate, the weight and position of the screws securing the cover plate to the body are independent of the maximum torque rating of the head. A reversible ratchet wrench (10) has a ratchet body (11) with a cavity (15) receiving the ratchet assembly (20). A pawl-engaging reversing lever is insertable through an opening in the ratchet body from the cavity (15) and has a flange (46) dimensioned to be trapped between the body (11) and the pawl (31). A seal (59) between the reversing lever (40) and the ratchet body (11) is provided by an O-ring (50) seated in a groove (45) in the outer surface of the reversing lever hub (44). A cover plate (55) closes the cavity (15) and cooperates with the pawl (31) and the flange to retain the reversing lever (40) in place.

The first portion includes a first opening 120 adapted to axially and slidably receive the release mechanism. The second portion includes a threaded opening 124 adapted to threadedly couple to the release mechanism. The push button release mechanism includes a push button 132, axially movable between first and second positions, a receiving portion 146 having an outer diameter, and an engagement portion 148 having an outer diameter, extending axially from the receiving portion. A sleeve 136 defines a cavity 150 within which the push button moves axially, the sleeve including external threads and a ball opening 144 for a ball 142. A biasing member 152 such as a spring is adapted to bias the push button axially outward from the cavity to the first position and align the engagement portion with the ball when axial force is not applied to the push button. When axial force is applied to the push button, the push button is adapted to be disposed in the second position to align the receiving portion with the ball.
