Method for displacing large blocks of earth

Номер: US4230368A
Автор: James M. Cleary, Jr.
Принадлежит: Individual

A method for elevating extremely large blocks of earth by displacement with a slurry composed of water and locally excavated materials. The blocks are separated on lateral faces by variously drilling, jetting, fracturing, and kerf cutting operations. The blocks are separated at the lower end by notching and hydraulic fracturing. Block movement is started by injecting gelled fluid into the narrow separations. In one set of applications the high density slurry filling the side clearances is less dense than the block being elevated. In these cases the earth blocks are displaced upward by injecting fluid into the underside, and the non hydrostatic component of the displacement pressure is contained by the gel strength of the slurry filling the narrow side clearance. In a second set of applications the blocks being elevated contain a high percentage of coal, and slurry filling the side clearances exceeds the block density. The blocks are then displaced upward by hydrostatic pressure. The method has a wide range of applications which include elevating a block and cementing it in place to form a storage cavity, elevating a block and fragmenting a hydrocarbon containing section into the resulting cavity in preparation for in situ recovery of hydrocarbons, and elevating a block to recover the coal contained in the block.

Low noise optical probe

Номер: US5638818A
Принадлежит: Masimo Corp

An optical probe for measurements, which is particularly suited to reduce noise in measurements taken on an easily compressible material, such as a finger, a toe, a forehead, an earlobe, or a lip. The probe includes a base having an aperture which leads to a chamber. The base is placed adjacent a portion of the material, the chamber being placed directly adjacent any easily compressible portion of the material. A photodetector is located within the chamber and does not contact the material. A light emitting diode (LED) is affixed to the material, opposite the photodetector and above the chamber. The material which is supported by the aperture and therefore rests above or has intruded into the chamber is inhibited from compression since nothing comes in contact with this portion of the material, even when the material moves. Thus, light from the LED is directed through a stabilized portion of the material, i.e., the optical path length through which light travels is stabilized, even during motion of the material. This reduces noise in the signal measured by the photodetector. A scattering medium is interposed between the LED and the material, between the material and the photodetector, or between the LED and the material as well as between the material and the photodetector. The scattering medium is used to improve the signal-to-noise ratio of the received optical signal.

Blood glucose monitoring system

Номер: US5743262A
Принадлежит: Masimo Corp

A blood glucose monitoring system includes a broadband light source and a specially fabricated optical filter for modulating optical radiation to be transmitted through a fleshy medium. Optical radiation which passes through the fleshy medium is detected by an optical detector which generates an electrical signal indicative of the intensity of the detected light. Digital signal processing is performed on the electrical signal to extract those optical characteristics of the electrical signal due to the optical characteristics of the filter and constituents of the fleshy May 1, 1995 medium other than blood glucose concentration. The monitoring system employs a unique "double-log" transformation to minimize errors due to indeterminate path length variations of the optical radiation through the fleshy medium. The monitoring system further employs specialized signal processing to avoid inaccuracies due to the previously unidentified solvent effect which arises when glucose is dissolved into water.

Delivery catheter and graft for aneurysm repair

Номер: CA2204411A1
Принадлежит: Individual

This invention provides a graft delivery system and methods for its use comprising a prosthetic graft (12) secured to an expandable anchoring member, such as a stent (13), by a butt-joint attachment means (21) to minimize the system's profile. The delivery system employs a catheter (11) with a relatively small diameter shaft (14) for flexibility and a relatively large diameter (14) delivery base (17) for supporting expansion of the anchoring member. The butt-joint attachment means comprises any means suitable to secure the graft to the anchoring member when deployed within the patient's vasculature and allows the anchoring member and graft to expand during deployment. In a preferred embodiment, the delivery system is configured so that the expansion of the anchoring member pulls the distal end of the graft over the proximal end of the anchoring member and the final expansion of the anchoring member seals the distal end of the graft (12) between the proximal end of the anchoring member and the vessel (20). One preferred method of use is to deploy a second anchoring member (31) coaxially within the already deployed first anchoring member and graft assembly, overlapping at least the distal end of the graft in order to further secure the graft and minimize flow by.

Optical sensor including information element

Номер: CA2221446A1

The method and apparatus of the present invention provides a system wherein light-emitting diodes (LEDs)(162) can be tuned within a given range by selecting their operating drive current in order to obtain a precise wavelength. The present invention further provides a manner in which to calibrate and utilize an LED probe (150), such that the shift in wavelength for a known change in drive current is a known quantity. In general, the principle of wavelength shift for current drive changes for LEDs is utilized in order to allow better calibration and added flexibility in the use of LED sensors, particularly in applications when the precise wavelength is needed in order to obtain accurate measurements. The present invention also provides a system in which it is not necessary to know precise wavelengths of LEDs where precise wavelengths were needed in the past. Finally, the present invention provides a method and apparatus for determining the operating wavelength of a light-emitting element such as a light--emitting diode.

Intraluminal stent for attaching a graft

Номер: CA2162956C
Принадлежит: Advanced Cardiovascular Systems Inc

A graft-and-stent combination is disclosed for deploying by an intravascular delivery system at the site of an aneurysm, the combination being expandable from a first diameter to a second, larger diameter to hold open and press the graft against regions of the body lumen just proximal and distal to the aneurysm. The combination is characterized by one or more stents that are flexible due to independently expandable and interconnected cylindrical elements, which provide sufficient radial strength to the combination when the graft-and-stent are being attached to the vessel, but which nonetheless afford sufficient resiliency to allow a great degree of expansion at a rapid rate when the combination is being deployed. Attachment elements in the form of hooks are provided to securely affix the ends of the stent extending distally and proximally of the graft after expansion to the walls of the vessel just distally and proximally of the aneurysm.

Digital electronic steam humidifier control

Номер: CA1118082A
Принадлежит: Wehr Corp

DIGITAL ELECTRONIC STEAM HUMIDIFIER CONTROL ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Disclosed herein is 3 method and a digital electronic steam humidifier control for use with a humidifier system including an electrode boiler to provide a normally repetitive fill, boil, fill-on-drain cycle. The humidifier control includes circuitry for providing an analog signal proportional to the electrode current, and a comparator network which receives the analog signal and a reference voltage and scaled voltages provided by additional circuitry to establish predetermined levels of electrode current at which the control responds. The comparator network provides a plurality of digital outputs having a high or low state depending upon the magnitude of the electrode current, which outputs are coupled to logic circuitry including NAND gates and which operates to actuate electrically controlled fill and drain valves to vary the water level so that the electrode current varies between predetermined lower and upper current limits, and which also operates to temporarily cut off the power to the electrodes if the electrode current exceeds a predeter-mined over-current limit. The logic circuitry also operates in conjunction with high water probes to prevent overfilling of the boiler and to cause boiling of the water without draining during start up so that the water acquires a predetermined higher level of conductivity so that the electrode boiler operates efficiently. An abnormal operation light and high and low current indicators are also provided to inform an operator of the status of operation of the control.
