A kit for the construction of a casket 1 comprising: a plurality of inter-engaging base sub-frames (14, 15, fig. 3), a plurality of inter-engaging upper sub-frames (21, 22, fig. 5), a plurality of struts (10, figure 2) for engagement with the base sub-frames and upper sub-frames, a plurality of inter-engaging lid frames 5, a plurality of panels 6, 7 for mounting into the container and lid framework, and at least two bridge components (11, figure 2) for connecting at least one of at least one junction between the plurality of base sub frames and at least one junction between the plurality of upper sub frames; wherein at least two dimensions of the casket kit are less than the equivalent dimensions of the constructed casket. Coffin

A coffin 1 comprising a plurality of panels 6 mounted in apertures formed by a framework of rigid struts 4, 5 at least one of the struts including a groove in which the panel is releasably mounted. Preferably the one or more grooves are arranged such that external pressure (e.g. from the soil) collapses in the panel and introduces soil to the interior. Preferably the coffin has a lid 3 with some attachment means. In various embodiments one, some or all of the panels may collapse, and in another just the panel(s) 7 in the lid. Preferably handles are mounted to the frame and the coffin has a lining. The design speeds up decomposition of the corpse by immediately introducing soil to it.

Casket

A casket 1 comprises a lid 6 and a body 2 with a base and at least four side panels 5. Each panel 5 comprises a board of MDF material with a decorative laminate on at least one surface. An upper edge region of each panel 5 includes a unitary top edge. The coffin 1 has at least one ledge facing towards the inside of the body 2 and spaced downwardly from the uppermost edge of the panels 5 by a distance equal to the thickness of the lid 6. The lid 6 fits within the edge region of the panels 5, supported by the or each ledge. The panels 5 may be attached to a framework of the coffin 1. Decorative features 7 may be provided at the top or bottom edges of each panel 5. The casket 1 looks like a wooden casket but has lower manufacturing costs.
