A multilayer protective tape for rotor blades of wind energy turbines is provided herein. The protective tape comprising a protective top layer comprising a polymer film, and an adhesive bottom layer. The top layer having a continuous surface (S) that is outwardly curved or outwardly trapezoidal such that the tape has a cross-sectional profile having an inner section between first and second edge lateral sections. The inner section comprises up to 30% of the width of the tape and has a thickness (Ti), while the first and second edge lateral sections have a thickness of T1 and T2, respectively, wherein Ti greater than each of T1 or T2, and the thickness (T1 or T2) of at least one edged lateral section is at most 600 μm and the thickness of the inner section (Ti) is at least 330 μm. Also provided is a method for applying the tape to rotor blades and a rotor blade protected by said protective tape.

The invention relates to a continuous self-metered process of forming a multilayer film comprising at least two superimposed polymer layers comprising the steps of: (i) providing a substrate ( 5 ); (ii) providing two or more coating knives ( 2, 3, 4 ) which are offset, independently from each other, from said substrate ( 5 ) and/or from an adjacent coating knife to form at least one substrate gap ( 9 ) relative to the surface of the substrate ( 5 ) and at least one outlet gap ( 10 ) relative to the surface of an adjacent coating knife; (iii) moving the substrate ( 5 ) relative to the coating knives ( 2, 3, 4 ) in a downstream direction ( 6 ), (iv) providing curable liquid precursors of the polymers (I, II, III) to the upstream side of the coating knives ( 2, 3, 4 ) thereby coating the two or more precursors (I, II, III) through the respective gaps ( 9, 10 ) as superimposed layers ( 12, 13, 14 ) onto the substrate ( 5 ); (v) optionally providing one or more solid films ( 1 1 ) and applying these essentially simultaneously with the formation of the adjacent lower polymer layer, and (vi) curing the precursor of the multilayer film thus obtained; wherein a lower layer of a curable liquid precursor (I, II, III) is covered by an adjacent upper layer of a curable liquid precursor (I, II, III) or a film ( 1 1 ), respectively, essentially without exposing said lower layer of a curable liquid precursor (I, II, III).

Kontinuierliches selbstdosiertes Verfahren zur Bildung eines mehrschichtigen Films, umfassend mindestens zwei übereinanderliegende Polymerschichten, das die folgenden Schritte aufweist: Bereitstellen eines Substrats; Bereitstellen von zwei oder mehr Beschichtungsrakeln, die unabhängig voneinander von dem Substrat versetzt sind, um einen Spalt normal zur Oberfläche des Substrats zu bilden; Bewegen des Substrats relativ zu den Beschichtungsrakeln in eine stromabwärts verlaufende Richtung, Bereitstellen härtbarer flüssiger Vorläufer der Polymere an der stromaufwärts liegenden Seite der Beschichtungsrakeln, wodurch die zwei oder mehr Vorläufer durch die jeweiligen Spalte als übereinanderliegende Schichten auf das Substrat aufgetragen werden; optional Bereitstellen eines oder mehrerer fester Filme und Auftragen dieser im Wesentlichen gleichzeitig mit der Bildung der angrenzenden unteren Polymerschicht und Härten des Vorläufers des derart erhaltenen mehrschichtigen Films; wobei eine untere Schicht eines härtbaren flüssigen Vorläufers von einer angrenzenden oberen Schicht eines härtbaren flüssigen Vorläufers bzw. eines festen Films bedeckt ist, im Wesentlichen ohne die untere Schicht eines härtbaren flüssigen Vorläufers freizulegen.
