The telecommunication network manager 7 also comprises a processor 102 configured to process the information from the input 104 and to output from the output 106 to each of the plurality of end point devices 2′,3′ using the data path 14 an indication of bit rate and at least one of an indication of forward error correction rate to use on the data path 14 based on the information and an indication of predicted packet loss rate along the data path 14 based on the information. In a telecommunication network (20), an IP phone (11) sends its identifier (e.g. MAC address) to a provisioning server (41) via the Internet. The server authenticates the phone and then returns to the phone an indication of either a public branch exchange (PBX,12) for use by the phone, a gateway to connect to the phone, or another provisioning server (Fig.5, not shown) which can provide the above information to the phone. The indications may be e.g. an IP address or a DNS name. The request from the phone may include information about its location which the provisioning server may use in determining which PBX, gateway or other server to indicate to the phone.
