The method of producing sophorolipids is through microbial resting cells of Candida bombicola . The sophorolipids obtained from resting state cultures are isolated as a complex mixture of compounds and then decanted as a dense oil from the culture broth, subsequently washed to remove free fatty acids. Secondary chemical transformation via base catalyzed hydrolysis is used to reduce the 8 possible structural sophorolipid species to a single moiety, the 17-L-[(2′-O-b-D-glucopyranosyl-b-D-glucopyranosyl)-oxy]-cis-9-octadecenoate de-acetylated free acid. The compound acts primarily through decreasing inflammatory cytokines and eliciting other synergistic anti-inflammatory mechanisms by blocking TLR4-CD14 upstream of the inflammatory signaling cascade. The compound can be administered either intraperitoneally or intravenously at single or multiple doses of 5-30 mg/kg of weight in solvent media or in capped nanoparticles, preferably within 48 hours of sepsis inception.

The aldehydes are then hydrogenated to the desired alcohol products or saturated aldehyde feed stocks. Specifically, methods in which 2,4-diethyloctanol is co-produced with 2-ethylhexanol in batch and continuous processes are described. A process for purifying glycerin recovered as a byproduct of biodiesel production comprises heating a glycerin effluent stream containing a low molecular weight alcohol, water and fatty acid esters of the low molecular weight alcohol to cause transesterification of the fatty acid esters to glycerides and additional low molecular weight alcohol. The reaction mixture is sparged with nitrogen to help remove water and low molecular weight alcohol, which drives the transesterification reaction towards glyceride formation. A wash water stream may also be added to the recovered glycerin stream from biodiesel production. Either before or following the transesterification reaction, an oil layer can be separated from the recovered glycerin stream by reducing the pH of the stream to below 7. Following separation of the oil layer and transesterification the glycerin stream is flash distilled to separate glycerin from water, salts, and glycerides.

A word processing system is disclosed in which a text stream is stored on a direct access storage device (DASD) for recall and editing. The text stream is organized into a document, which is stored on the DASD as a data set. The data set consists of an index portion and a portion containing text records. The index portion is divided into nodes, of which the primary node is called the root node. When the system operator designates a data set for use, the root node is fetched and retained in a system memory to eliminate the need to fetch it from the DASD for every access. When sequential records are accessed, such as during a document duplication operation, the index is fully searched only for the first of the sequential records. Subsequent records are located through index nodes already in the system memory, with subsequent index nodes being fetched from the DASD only when the last index entry in the current index node has been processed. When sequential records are written to the DASD, the index is fully searched only for the insertion point for the first record. For subsequent records, the same index node is updated until there is insufficient room for index entry for the latest record written to the DASD. At that time the index node is split and index entries at higher levels of the index are updated in a similar manner.

Disclosed is a method of laundering soiled fabrics comprising the steps of contacting said fabric in an aqueous laundering solution with a nonaqueous liquid detergent composition containing from about 40 % to about 99 % by weight of the composition of a surfactant-containing non-aqueous liquid phase and from about 1 % to about 50 % by weight of the composition of particulate material which is substantially insoluble in said liquid phase and which is selected from peroxygen bleaching agents, bleach activators, organic detergent builders, inorganic alkalinity sources and combinations thereof. A dye transfer inhibitor and suds suppressors are essential components in one aspect of the present invention. The detergent composition is added to the aqueous solution in a washing machine at a concentration in the aqueous solution of from 2000 ppm to about 10,000 ppm, wherein from about 3 gallons to about 8 gallons of water is used to form the aqueous solution, said fabric to water weight ratio is from about 1:1 to about 1:9 and said fabrics undergo a wash time of from about 8 minutes to about 16 minutes. The method of the present invention is more effective, uses less water and energy and produces a better result than the known methods.

A process for cleaning steel surfaces comprises applying to the surface a composition, suitably in the form of a paste, containing (a) hydrofluoric acid and (b) an inert material having no wetting properties, or inhibiting properties against base metal attack by the free acid, e.g. a water-insoluble inert inorganic compound, such as a water-insoluble fluoride, for example magnesium, strontium, barium, lead or, preferably, calcium fluoride, carbon black or graphite, or an organic compound such as paaffin wax or powdered polyethylene. The acid may be concentrated or dilute, and in the case where the acid concentration is not more than 20% (b) may additionally be an organic water-soluble thickening agent such as polyvinyl alcohol or gum tragacanth. In general it is preferred to use equal parts by weight of (a) and (b), but a suitable range of proportions is 1 : 3 to 3 : 1. The composition desirably also contains 0.1-5% of a wetting agent, preferably a condensate of 9 moles of ethylene oxide with 1 mole of a sec.-alcohol containing 16 carbon atoms; a corrosion inhibitor such as tolyl thiourea, may also be included. After use the acid is preferably neutralized on the surface by the application of sodium hydroxide, carbonate, bicarbonate or phosphate together, if desired, with an inert filler as at (b) above.

A method of preparing a coated ceramic powder comprises the steps of (a) polymerizing each of a tetrafunctional siloxane monomer, a trifunctional siloxane monomer, a difunctional siloxane monomer, and a monofunctional siloxane monomer, (b) adding a quantity of ceramic powder to a reaction vessel, (c) shear mixing the ceramic powder for a time sufficient to wet substantially all of the powder surface, (d) adding the siloxane polymer prepared in step (a) to the reaction vessel containing the shear mixed ceramic powder, (e) shear mixing the shear mixed ceramic powder and the siloxane polymer for a time sufficient to form a siloxane polymer coated ceramic powder, and (f) separating the coated ceramic powder from the components remaining in the reaction vessel. The process may be rendered continuous by employing continuous high-shear mixing equipment and appropriate process modifications.

A process is described for producing fatty acid alkyl esters for both diesel fuel and non-fuel uses. The feed material includes whole oleaginous seeds slurried in a liquid triglyceride oil containing at least two weight percent free fatty acid, wherein oil from inside the seeds is first extracted with concurrent esterification of free fatty acids from all sources in an acidic environment. Following sufficient free fatty acid reaction, the intermediate product is subjected to base-catalyzed concurrent extraction and transesterification. Decanting of the byproduct glycerin is followed by water washing. Subsequently, the fatty acid ester product is concurrently purified and fractionated into a biodiesel fuel stream and a non-fuel fraction, each of which undergoes post treatment as needed. The process is optionally integrated with glycerin purification and/or methanol recovery.

Disclosed is a method of laundering soiled fabrics comprising the steps of contacting said fabric in an aqueous laundering solution with a nonaqueous liquid detergent composition containing from about 40 % to about 99 % by weight of the composition of a surfactant-containing non-aqueous liquid phase and from about 1 % to about 50 % by weight of the composition of particulate material which is substantially insoluble in said liquid phase and which is selected from peroxygen bleaching agents, bleach activators, organic detergent builders, inorganic alkalinity sources and combinations thereof. A dye transfer inhibitor and suds suppressors are essential components in one aspect of the present invention. The detergent composition is added to the aqueous solution in a washing machine at a concentration in the aqueous solution of from 2000 ppm to about 10,000 ppm, wherein from about 3 gallons to about 8 gallons of water is used to form the aqueous solution, said fabric to water weight ratio is from about 1:1 to about 1:9 and said fabrics undergo a wash time of from about 8 minutes to about 16 minutes. The method of the present invention is more effective, uses less water and energy and produces a better result than the known methods.

Additionally, the invention preferably relates to a reactor and method addition-ally comprising the steps of (1) introducing the waste gas stream having the dissolved organic acids removed through an inlet into a chamber containing a catalyst bed for oxidizing the pollutants, (2) passing the waste gas stream through a distributor plate containing a multiplicity of holes located between the inlet and the catalyst bed in a manner such that the waste gas is substantially uniformly distributed over the catalyst bed, (3) pasting the waste gas through the catalyst bed while maintaining the catalyst bed at a temperature suffi-cient to sustain catalytic oxidation of the oxidizable pollu-tants, and (4) withdrawing through an outlet of the chamber the waste gas stream which has passed through the catalyst bed. Additionally, it is preferred that the method includes the step of removing the deposited organic acids from the above mentioned collecting means. The collecting means is prefer-ably in the from of a thin fin parallel tube heat exchanger.
