Disclosed is a water filtration unit for filtering particulate from particulate heavy water. The filtration unit comprises a passive separator (110) and a plurality of filtration modules (150) located in a housing (101). The passive separator, which may be a vortex separator, receives a pressurized source of particulate-heavy water and separates most of the particulate mass from the water to output particulate-lean water. Particulate egress means disposed at least partly within the housing receive, and allow disposal of, the particulate separated from the water via a plenum (130). The plurality of filtration modules in the housing receive the particulate-lean water simultaneously and filter remaining particulate and contaminants from the particulate-lean water by allowing passage of the water through porous filtration media of each module under gravity. At least one outlet conduit is coupled to an outlet in a wall of the housing to receive filtered water from the filtration modules and provide the filtered water to a fluid sink outside the housing. The filtration modules are configured to be readily replaceable with another filtration module containing fresh or regenerated porous filtration media.
