A lead delivery mechanism (13) for a mechanical pencil consists of a lead chuck (14) which is designed to grip the lead and which is fitted to the end of a lead pipe (12), a sleeve (16) abutting a chuck clamping ring (15) loosely fitted to the head portion of the lead chuck (14), a spring member (19) for clamping the chuck disposed resiliently between the sleeve (16) and the lead pipe (12), and a locking ring (18) loosely mounted on the lead chuck (14) and engaged by the rear end of the spring member (19). The locking ring (18) is restrained in the rearward direction by a stepped portion (14a) of the lead chuck (14). As the spring is held captive by the ring (18) the locking mechanism can be handled as a unit in its assembly with the lead pipe (12).

An end plug mounting structure for writing instrument of the present invention can securely mount an end plug onto a barrel and remove it more easily. Even if assembling and removing is performed repeatedly, tightness for the end plug to be assembled on the barrel can be prevented from weakening. A locking hole is provided around cylindrical rear portion of the barrel, an inserting portion with circular cross section inserted into rear portion of the barrel from rear end of the barrel is provided on the end plug, a locking protrusion locked in a locking hole is provided at periphery of the inserting portion, a groove extending forward from rear end of the barrel and in which the locking protrusion moves is provided on inner surface of rear portion of the barrel, thereby the end plug is assembled on the barrel by means of locking the locking protrusion that moves forward in the groove in the locking hole. The locking hole is configured to be adjacent to the groove, so that the locking protrusion moving forward in the groove moves in circumferential direction so as to be locked in the locking hole. A protruding strip extending in lengthwise direction is configured on side bottom of the groove on the side of the locking hole, so that the locking protrusion can stride over the protruding strip to move along circumferential direction.

A lead cartridge opening and closing unit wherein outward engaging piece portions are provided on a chuck type opening and closing mechanism which is divided into sections in the diametrical direction and has inward elastic force and which is further disposed on the lead cartridge; the outward engaging piece portions moving inwardly against the inward elastic force along the diametrical direction thereof thereby to open lead conducting holes in case of forcible insertion into and engagement with a lead guide, while the outward engaging piece portions being restored by means of the inward elastic force to move outwardly along the diametrical direction thereof thereby to close the lead conducting holes in case of release for the forcible insertion and engagement; whereby when the outward engaging piece portions of the chuck type opening and closing mechanism are forcibly fitted in the lead guide, the outward engaging piece portions move inwardly along the diametrical direction thereof to be resiliently fitted to and engaged with the lead guide so that the lead conducting holes are opened, and on the other hand when the outward engaging piece portions are drawn out from the lead guide, these outward engaging piece portions are restored outwardly by means of the inward elastic force along the diametrical direction thereof so that the lead conducting holes are closed.

With the mounting sections of the clip fitted in and engaged with the fitting recesses in the insertion member, the insertion member is inserted into the rear part of the shaft body to fit the rear part of the clip into the clip mounting section of the shaft tube. A rod-shaped object is held by the receptacle. When the lead cartridge is incorporated into a mechanical pencil, the case becomes unable to turn relative to the outer sleeve of the mechanical pencil, and part of the guide sleeve protrudes out of the mechanical pencil.

A composite writing implement is capable of being used as a ball-point pen, a mechanical pencil or a stylus pen. The composite writing implement includes a barrel, a pencil lead feeder unit axially slidably placed in a front part of the barrel, a ballpoint refill unit disposed behind and coaxially with the pencil lead feeder unit in a back part of the barrel and including a ballpoint refill case and a ballpoint refill fixedly held in the ballpoint refill case, a rotary cam operatively connecting the ballpoint refill case and the pencil lead feeder unit, and a cap put on the ballpoint refill case so as to cover the ballpoint tip of the ballpoint refill, provided with a stylus tip, capable of being used as a stylus and means for turning the rotary cam through the ballpoint refill case to make the pencil lead feeder feed a lead.

A composite writing tool wherein when the rear shaft is rotated relative to a front shaft, a cam sleeve rotates with the rear shaft, and the relative rotation occurring between the cam sleeve and the front shaft and an intermediate shaft causes one of writing shafts guided in the axial direction by the intermediate shaft to be selectively held in a protruding position, and when a knock sleeve is knocked, the cam sleeve is knocked to advance a lead of the writing shaft protruded by the cam sleeve. The rear part of the intermediate shaft is inserted into the cam sleeve, and engaging pieces of the rear part of the intermediate shaft penetrate a through hole formed in a perpendicular engaging wall formed in a tail cap fastened to the rear end of a rear shaft, and are engaged with the through hole. The cam sleeve and the knock sleeve are linked to each other through a recess elsewhere than the through hole in the engaging wall.
