Disclosed is a method of coating a substrate comprising the steps of (a) forming a basecoat by coating the substrate with one or more applications of a pigmented basecoating composition; and (b) thereafter forming a topcoat by coating the basecoat with one or more applications of an essentially clear topcoating composition; wherein the basecoating composition and/or the topcoating composition comprises an addition interpolymer containing at least one silicon atom directly bonded to a hydrolyzable group, which addition interpolymer (vinyl type) is derived from a mixture of copolymerizable ethylenically unsaturated monomers containing an isobornyl group-containing monomer selected from the group consisting of isobornyl methacrylate, isobornyl acrylate and a mixture thereof. The amount of isobornyl group-containing monomer based on the total weight of the mixture of copolymerizable ethylenically unsaturated monomers ranges from 10 percent to 60 percent by weight.

Curable powder clear coating composition and coated substrate with multilayered coatings have as the predominant film-forming polymer in the coating at least one epoxy acrylic copolymer in an amount from 60 to 99.99 percent by weight and 10 to 40 percent by weight of a polycarboxylic acid crosslinking agent. The percentages by weight are based on solids of the curable coating composition. A single predominant film-forming epoxy acrylic copolymer has a number average molecular weight in the range of about 1000 to 5500; a calculated Tg in the range of 50 to 85°C; epoxy content in the range of 35 to 85, and a styrene content resulting from an amount of styrene monomer in the range of up to about 25 weight percent based on the weight percent of the monomers to form the copolymer. The blend of epoxy acrylic copolymer has one polymer which is the single epoxy acrylic copolymer or one having a number average molecular weight in the range of about 1000 to about 10,000, a calculated Tg in the range of about 40°C to 85°C, and an epoxy content from 40 to 60 weight percent of the total weight of the monomers to prepare the epoxy acrylic copolymer. The other polymer of the blend has a number average molecular weight in the range of about 500 to about 3000, a calculated Tg in the range of about 35°C to about 125°C, and an epoxy content from glycidyl functional ethylenically unsaturated monomer that is higher than that of the first epoxy functional acrylic copolymer of the blend and in the range of about 50 to about 100.

Coating materials comprising polymeric particles in a geometrically ordered array are disclosed. The particles can be formed from materials having different glass transition temperatures; this allows for phase segregation between areas of different glass transition temperatures within each particle. Typically, at least 50 percent of the particles will form a hexagonal array, capable of exhibiting Bragg diffraction. Because the particles within the array do not coalesce to any appreciable extent, significant surface area is provided by the present coating materials. Thus, the present materials have particularly good sound deadening properties. Substrates coated with the present materials are also disclosed, as are methods for inhibiting sound transmission through a substrate using these coatings.

Cured thermoset multilayered composite coatings with a powder clear coat and a waterborne base coat have improved chip resistance for the coating. The waterborne base coat composition has one or more cross linkable film-forming polymers, one or more cross linking agents for cross linking the film-forming polymer, and one or more pigments. This basecoat is applied to a bare or previously painted substrate to give a film thickness in the range of about 0.1 to 3 mils (2.54 to 76.2 microns). The basecoat is dehydrated from treatment at a temperature from ambient to an elevated temperature of up to about 90 °C for up to about 15 minutes before it is contacted with powder clear coating composition. The powder clear coating composition has a predominant amount of one or more cross linkable, meltable and mobile film-forming polymer and/or copolymer having a weight average molecular weight of one or more polymers/copolymers in the range of about 2000 to about 6000. The film-forming polymer or copolymer has an amount of functionality for cross linking of at least 40 weight percent of the total resin solids for the polymers. The glass transition temperature for the powder coating composition is at least about 25 °C. The powder coating composition for the clear coat also has one or more cross linking agents and when cured has a film thickness in the range of about 35 to about 100 microns. The basecoat and clear coat are co-cured. Optionally, one or more primer coats may be beneath the basecoat.
