Process for the recovery of sulfur from Claus tail gas streams

Recovering sulfur from a gas stream containing hydrogen sulfide by oxidizing the gas stream to convert the hydrogen sulfide in the gas stream to sulfur oxide, and thus form a sulfur oxide enriched gas stream. The sulfur oxide enriched gas stream is contacted with a solid, sulfation resistant adsorbent bed at relatively low temperatures to extract the sulfur oxides and retain them as sulfur compounds, thus forming a sulfur oxide depleted gas stream. The adsorbent bed is then contacted with an inert or reducing gas stream to reduce the retained sulfur compounds to sulfur and/or sulfur dioxide and thereby form an enriched sulfur and/or sulfur dioxide bearing stream. The elemental sulfur is recovered and/or the sulfur dioxide bearing stream may be recycled to the Claus unit for further conversion.

A process for adsorbing hydrocarbons from an acid gas stream includes passing the acid gas stream through an adsorbent which selectively removes hydrocarbons, desorbing the hydrocarbons from the adsorbent and contacting the desorbed hydrocarbons with an acid gas removal solution to remove acid gases which have been coadsorbed with the hydrocarbons. The process is particularly useful in removing hydrocarbons from a hydrogen sulfide-containing stream which is being directed to Claus processing for conversion into elemental sulfur. Useful adsorbents include crystalline titanium silicate molecular sieves containing titania octahedral sites such as ETS-10 and similar materials, as well as high silica aluminosilicate zeolite.

A pressure swing adsorption process for the separation of nitrogen from a mixture of of same with methane, utilizing two separate PSA stages, one containing a nitrogen selective adsorbent and the second containing a methane-selective adsorbent. In the process, the first PSA unit containing a nitrogen selective adsorbent forms a product methane stream and a waste stream rich in nitrogen which is passed to a second PSA unit containing a methane selective adsorbent which forms a product nitrogen stream and a waste stream rich in methane. The waste stream rich in methane can be treated to remove heavy hydrocarbons therefrom before the methane is recycled to feed.

Novel process for removing polymer from aqueous absorbent solutions used to contact organic gas-containing gas streams comprising the steps of adjusting the polymer-containing aqueous absorbent solutions to a pH of not more than about 8.5, preferably not more than about 7.5, for example, about 6.0 to about 8.5, preferably about 7.0 to about 7.5, and removing the polymer from the resulting solutions by decantation and/or filtration. The novel process is particularly applicable to the system of removing acid gas from hydrocarbon-containing feed gases which contain one or more polymerizable components wherein the feed gas is contacted with an aqueous absorbent solution which absorbs the acid gas and, thereafter, the absorbent solution is stripped to rid it of said acid gas. The adjustment of pH can be accomplished by increasing the acid gas loading in the aqueous absorbent or by adding an acid, preferably one which will not form a heat stable salt with the absorbent. The pH adjustment, e.g., acidification, and filtration can be performed on the total mainstream or a portion thereof, i.e., a sidestream, before it is stripped.

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Novel process for removing polymer from aqueous absorbent solutions used to contact organic gas-containing gas streams comprising the steps of adjusting the polymer-containing aqueous absorbent solutions to a pH of not more than about 8.5, preferably not more than about 7.5, for example, about 6.0 to about 8.5, preferably about 7.0 to about 7.5, and removing the polymer from the resulting solutions by decantation and/or filtration. The novel process is particularly applicable to the system of removing acid gas from hydrocarbon-containing feed gases which contain one or more polymerizable components wherein the feed gas is contacted with an aqueous absorbent solution which absorbs the acid gas and, thereafter, the absorbent solution is stripped to rid it of said acid gas. The disclosed tray provides upwardly directed laminar setting of liquid over the tray perforation openings for high selectivity vapor-liquid contacting and has particu-lar utility in the absorption of hydrogen sulfide from a gas mixture containing hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide.

A pressure swing adsorption process for the separation of nitrogen from natural gas utilizes two separate pressure swing adsorption stages, the first containing a hydrocarbon-selective adsorbent and the second containing a nitrogen-selective adsorbent. In the process, the product stream from the first pressure swing adsorption unit contains a natural gas stream having a reduced hydrocarbon content and the product stream from the second pressure swing adsorption unit is a natural gas stream having a reduced nitrogen concentration. The product from the second pressure swing adsorption unit is used to desorb the hydrocarbons from the first pressure swing adsorption unit so as to add the hydrocarbons, which have heat value to the product natural gas stream. Periodically, heating the nitrogen-selective adsorbent with heated product stream from the second pressure swing adsorption unit has been found to improve the capacity of the nitrogen-selective adsorbent to adsorb nitrogen.

This invention provides a pressure swing adsorption (PSA) process for the separation of nitrogen from a mixture of the same with methane which comprises: a) passing a feed stream comprising said mixture in contact with a nitrogen-selective sorbent in a PSA unit so as to preferentially adsorb nitrogen and produce a methane-rich product stream containing at least 70 mol. % methane and a low pressure purge stream having a higher molar concentration of nitrogen than said mixture; and (b) subsequent to step (a), periodically heating said nitrogen-selective sorbent with the methane-rich product stream to drive off accumulated methane from the sorbent.
