Ammonium sulphate.-To ensure the production of neutral sulphate, the ammoniacal gas or vapours are divided into two streams one of which is introduced into a part of the bath in which an excess of acid is maintained, and the other into a neutral zone of the same bath, preferably in proximity to the place at which the salt is withdrawn. In the saturator shown, the main gases enter the bath through tubes 14 with flared and serrated mouths 15 dipping but slightly into the liquid at the place to which acid is supplied by pipes 28, so that there is but little resistance to the flow of the gases. The ammoniacal gases from the distillation column are passed to the bottom of the bath through the pipe 19, the ammonium sulphate being withdrawn through the ejector 25. The pressure necessary to introduce these gases can be produced in a simple manner.

Washers. - A liquid - seal gas washer, cooler, ammonia extractor, or like apparatus for treating gases or vapours with liquids, and comprising a series of superposed chambers a, is arranged so that the bubbling-hoods, which extend across each chamber and are symmetrically placed with respect to each other, always separate a liquid inlet from an outlet. The hoods e cover longitudinal flanged openings c, and are provided on one side with openings or recesses f and form a joint on the other side with the bottom of the chamber. In alternate chambers, the recessed edges of the hoods are adjacent to each other, as in this case a central overflow h<1> is provided ; in the other chambers, the joint-forming edges of the hoods are adjacent and an overflow h is provided at each side. In a modification, the hoods are all arranged so that the recessed edges face each other, and the overflows are at the sides of the chambers, but the superposed hoods are arranged crossways.

Coking.-Relates to improvements in gas-delivery pipes for coke ovens and gas-generating plant, and, when the arrangement of the pipes is such that the rising pipe a, connected to the coke oven or generator, is connected to the gas collecting pipe f by means of a bend c, consists in constructing the joints in sucha a manner that they are not effected by the tar contained in the gas, and also in providing a dish or trough m for collecting the tar. The connection between the bend c and the pipe a consists of a spherical joint e, b, and between the bend and the pipe f a liquid-seal joint is formed, extensions i, l being provided to prevent tar from entering the seal. The trough m is adjustable, and is lowered when in its working position, but is raised to the position shown, to form a liquid seal, when the bend c is swung aside upon the spherical joint; the tar may then be removed. The spherical joint also permits of the ready turning of the bend under the expansion caused by heat.

Coking.-Relates to a method of working the regenerative coking-furnace described in Specification No. 28,811, A.D. 1904, in which the waste heat of the combustion products is greater than that which is required for heating the air necessary for combustion. To utilize this balance, part of the combustion products is diverted before passing through the regenerator and is utilized for other purposes, such as for heating a steam generator, or, if all the combustion products pass through the regenerator, an excess of air is used, and that part of the hot air which is not required for combustion in the furnace is diverted after passing through the generators. In the apparatus described, gas, supplied by the mains a, a<1>, burns in the flues d on one side of a passage i in the walls of the apparatus. The combustion products pass down the flues d on the other side of the passage i, and the combustion is maintained by air passing alternately from the flues b, h, and through the regenerators c, g. The diversion of the combustion products is effected by means of a sliding valve through the passage i, which leads to a flue k between the regenerators c, g, and the diversion of the desired part of the hot air from the regenerators c, g is effected through passages n. For this purpose stones or blocks are employed of the form shown in plan and side elevation in Fig. 1. Two such bricks placed together enclose an open- ing f which forms the flue, and in order to increase the efficiency of the heating gases the superimposed layers are crossed as shown in Fig. 2, so as to provide projecting corners e. To produce the slight longitudinal divergence of the walls required in a coke oven, the half-blocks a are separated, by small blocks or plates p, which diminish progressively in thickness, as shown in Fig. 3, from the charging end of the oven to the discharging end, at which end the wall is narrower and the oven consequently wider. The inner surface of the stones is glazed, and the surface in contact with the coke is smoothed.

10,337. Koppers. H. May 18. Coking.-Relates to coke ovens which may be used as ordinary, or as bye-product recovering, overs. A batch of ovens is represented in Fig. 2 by four partial sections taken along planes at right-angles to the ovens A, A<1>. Beneath alternate ovens A are gas passages g<1>, and beneath the ovens A' are air passages l<1> ; these passages g<1>, l<1> respectively communicate by means of porcelain tubes d<1>, d<2> with the heating-flues h. When working with recovery of bye-products and cold air is being used for combustion, gas and air are supplied to the passages g<1> from pipes v, g, having branch pipes m, n connected by T-shaped delivery pipes q. If hot air is employed, the passages g<1> are supplied with a mixture of inflammable gas and a neutral gas, such as chimney smoke. The lower parts of the flues h are provided with median partitions s. When the oven is worked as an ordinary one. the gases pass from the oven through passages e, f into one end of the horizontal flue, with which the upper parts of flue h communicate, and are burnt by means of air from an air inlet f<1> ; the horizontal flue is divided, during ordinary working, by means of a sliding door. The burning gases then pass through a curved channel o into a channel p situated beneath the oven, and thence they are conducted into the opposite end of the horizontal flue.

Coking.-Air and gas are supplied to the heating flues of coke ovens so that the combination of the air and gas does not take place until the level of the sole of the oven is reached, the air is preliminarily heated, and the fusing of the refractory material of the walls prevented. In the oven shown in Fig. 3, gas is supplied from the passage a, beneath the heating-flue d, to the gas-nozzle c, and air enters by an oblique passage e. The gas, ascending at the centre, is enclosed in a current of air moving upwards in a helical path, and combustion takes place at the centre of the flue. In another arrangement, shown in Fig. 6, a nozzle f is inserted in the air inlet, whereby the air-supply, as well as the gas-supply, may be regulated by means of interchangeable nozzles,
