A safety system for a wood chipper having an elongated delivery chute into which a person would load tree branches, limbs and tree trunks. A metal sensor is mounted in the chute intermediate its front and rear ends and is oriented to detect any metal passing through the passageway of the chute. A gate is mounted inside the chute and it is normally in an open position. The gate is located at a position between the metal sensor and the rear of the chute. Some wood chippers have rollers mounted adjacent the rear end of the chute for pulling the tree branches, limbs and tree trunks into the inlet port of the housing containing rotating cutting blades. In this type of wood chipper, the metal sensor would send a signal immediately to reverse the direction of rotation of the rollers upon sensing metal passing thereby and prevent the person's hand and arm from being drawn into the cutting blades.

A compact variable pitch fan has a hydraulic pitch change mechanism. A pitch change piston is constrained to follow reciprocating motion under hydraulic control within a peripheral hub from which fan blades extend outward. An additional feature is the use of separated guiding and seal surfaces. A still further feature is the use of a pitch sensor, particularly on the hydraulic line leading to the variable pitch fan.

Variable pitch fan

A variable pitch fan in which the pitch of the fan blades is varied under control of a controller according to the speed of the fan. The controller is programmed to respond to increased fan speed by decreasing pitch of the fan blades. The variable pitch fan has a piston extending axially from a main shaft, about which main shaft a fan blade hub rotates. A pitch shifter is mounted on a cylinder, which itself is mounted on the piston. The pitch shifter is actuated by hydraulic fluid supplied through the main shaft to the cylinder. The piston is preferably axially stationary in relation to the main shaft. The cylinder is secured against rotational movement by at least one guide pin passing into the main shaft. Grease for the pitch shifter is supplied through the guide pin. One guide pin may be used for grease supply, while another may be used for excess grease return. Cooling of a pitch shifter may be accomplished using a heat sink mounted within the fan hub, preferably in a fan configuration, to conduct heat away from the cylinder into air rotating within the fan hub. Counterweights are mounted on each fan blade of a variable pitch fan, preferably hydraulically actuated, in a position which generates a torque opposite in direction to torque generated by the fan blades. The counterweights may be overbalanced, underbalanced, or balanced.

After initiating hydration reaction by feeding the olefinic feedstock and water, increased catalytic activity is obtained. Disclosed herein is a method for utilizing the exothermic energy generated by a low temperature cure reaction to access a high-temperature cure reaction, which is otherwise energetically inaccessible at a chosen tool temperature, thereby producing a cured resin matrix with properties closely matching to those produced via high-temperature cure reactions but achieved via a short cure time and low cure temperature. Also disclosed is a short-cure resin composition containing: (a) at least one multifunctional epoxy resin having an epoxy functionality of greater than 1; (b) a hardener composition containing (i) at least one aliphatic or cycloaliphatic amine curing agent having one or more amino groups per molecule; (ii) at least one aromatic amine curing agent having one or more amino groups per molecule; and optionally, (iii) an imidazole as curing accelerator. The improved properties of this resin composition include being curable at a temperature of = 120°C for a time period of less than 10 minutes to achieve a degree of cure higher than that derived from the same composition with just (i) aliphatic/cycloaliphatic amine or (ii) aromatic amine in isolation.

Integrated semiconductor and transition-metal oxide nanostructures and methods for preparing same

This invention encompasses methods for the preparation of a series of nanostructures and nanostructured devices, as well as the devices prepared by this method. The innovation pertains to methods of materials synthesis for producing bottom-up nanostructures with integration of technologically important semiconductor materials (Si, SiGe, Ge, GaAs, GaN, CdSe and other group IV, III- V and II- VI) with a class of technologically important functional oxide materials known as transition metal oxides. The methods benefit from being inexpensive, robust, and controllable in terms of component composition, hierarchal design flexibility, and component thicknesses. The nanostructures produced by these methods have the added benefit of their transferability to other non-traditional substrates and/or platforms. The devices enabled by this method include semiconductor nanostructures that are enhanced by transition metal oxide components for non-volatile memories, nanoscale magnetoresistive spintronic devices, transistors, transducers, and single-molecule detectors. The bottom-up nanotechnology and scales approaching one-dimensional behavior translate to reduced fabrication cost and increased device performance.
