The invention "Process and apparatus for generating CO2 gas by fermentation of a sugar solution and for enriching aquarium water therewith" makes possible, with optimal utilisation of the sugar to be fermented, a long-term uniform CO2 generation by fermentation at a low level and an enrichment of the aquarium water in accordance with the CO2 requirement with a high degree of utilisation of the CO2 gas generated by a diffusion apparatus having a metering apparatus which is simple to handle. The CO2 gas generated in a fermentation vessel is dissolved in the aquarium water in this case by means of a diffusion apparatus having diffusion chambers arranged one above the other in the manner of a cascade, the amount of CO2 to be brought into solution in the aquarium water being dosed, in the case of continuously flowing gas, by connection and disconnection of the diffusion chambers. For continuous, long-term measurement of pH of liq., e.g. aquarium water, as well as direct or indirect measurement of concn. and concn. changes, a test container in the form of a silicone rubber hose (3), adhesive bonded at one end to close it. Gases are exchanged via the surface (10) of the hose wall (9) and concn. gradient is produced between the water and the test medium within the hose. The wall is impermeable to the indicator substance. Equilibrium is produced beween the CO2 content determining pH in the water and the test medium. ADVANTAGE - Rapid response to changes.
