A valve member is mounted on a shaft to pivot within a fluid passage. A control selectively moves a piston in a linear direction to control a position of the valve member in the fluid passage. The piston causes a roller pin to move as the piston moves linearly. The roller pin is mounted in crank collars of a crank shaft such that movement of the roller pin causes the crank collars to rotate crank shaft rotating position, and the valve shaft. The roller pin is mounted within the crank collars by bearings. The bearings each have an outer race associated with a crank collar, an inner race associated with the roller pin, and bearing members separate the inner and outer race. There is a spring bias resisting movement of the inner races relative to said roller pin. An anti-ice system is also disclosed.

A novel and useful system and method of accelerated learning in neural networks using silicon based quantum dot arrays. Unitary noise is derived from a probability of detecting a particle within a quantum dot array structure comprising position based charge qubits with two time independent basis states |0> and |1>. A two level electron tunneling device such as an interface device, qubit or other quantum structure is used to generate quantum noise. The electron tunneling device includes a reservoir of particles, a quantum dot, and a barrier that is used to control tunneling between the reservoir and the quantum dot. Controlling the bias applied to the barrier controls the probability of detection. Thus, the probability density function (PDF) of the output unitary noise can be controlled to correspond to a desired probability. The quantum unitary noise is injected into one or more layers of an artificial neural network (ANN) to improve the learning and training process. The quantum noise source is also used to perform stochastic rounding in the ANN. The PDF of the quantum noise source output is set to a desired value in accordance with the remainder portion of input numbers within the layers of the ANN to be rounded.

Highly sensitive devices for detecting nitric oxide and/or other gaseous analytes in gaseous samples are improved by the incorporation of a carbon monoxide scavenger in the interior of the device or in the device packaging. The release of carbon monoxide within the housing of the device by the plastic used in the construction of the housing or by anything within the device that releases carbon monoxide causes a loss in sensitivity due to competition between the carbon monoxide and the nitric oxide for the binding sites on the device sensor. The scavenger corrects this by either catalyzing the oxidation of carbon monoxide to the less competitive carbon dioxide or immobilizing the carbon monoxide by affinity-type or covalent binding. Analogous effects are achieved for analytes other than nitric oxide but that likewise encounter interference from carbon monoxide in binding to sensors.

A method and apparatus for constructing displays of partially ordered information for event tracing and debugging from systems exhibiting concurrent processing characteristics, such as distributed systems. The method and apparatus provide displays wherein the information is maintained in the partial order while allowing intuitive scrolling of the information on the display through the implementation of predefined unidirectional movement, monotonicity, priority, maximal display and minimal change constraints. The arrangement of the information on the display may be changed by the user and appropriate labels andidentifiers can be included as desired. The information may also be grouped into clusters to reduce clutter on the display, allowing information of particular interest to be examined more easily.

One aspect of the invention is a removable strap for a snowboard boot to preventing the rider's foot from lifting in the boot. The ankle strap enables a soft boot to be used with both a strap-less step-in binding system, and a strap binding system. Another aspect is a snowboard binding including a strap adapted to releasably secure the snowboard boot and constructed and arranged to avoid creation of a pressure point at an instep bone of the rider. A further aspect is an apparatus comprising a snowboard boot and a strap attached thereto. The strap is arranged to prevent the rider's heel from lifting in the snowboard boot, and is constructed and arranged to avoid creation of a pressure point at an instep bone of the rider.

In one embodiment, an apparatus includes a scissor sensor stack, a soft bias layer positioned behind the scissor sensor stack in an element height direction, the soft bias layer including a soft magnetic material, and a hard bias layer, at least a portion thereof being positioned behind the soft bias layer in the element height direction, the hard bias layer including a hard magnetic material having an initialization magnetization that is perpendicular to a media-facing surface of the apparatus to provide unidirectional anisotropy to the soft bias layer, wherein the scissor sensor stack includes a first free layer, a second free layer positioned above the first free layer, and a barrier layer positioned between the first free layer and the second free layer. A dimmer circuit for providing AC power from an AC voltage source to an inductive lighting load disposed in series with the dimmer circuit, comprising: a bidirectional semiconductor switch having at least one control electrode provided with a control signal for controlling the amount of power provided to the load, the switch in normal operation being able to be controlled to block voltage in first and second opposite polarity half-cycles of the AC voltage source but in a failure mode being able to block the AC voltage source in only one polarity half-cycle of the AC voltage source and not being able to block the AC voltage source in the second opposite polarity half-cycle; a controller for the switch for determining if said failure mode of the switch occurs which can cause an asymmetry between the half-cycles delivered to the load and thus a DC voltage component to be delivered to the load; a power supply for supplying power to the controller and provided with power across the dimmer circuit; the controller controlling the switch if such failure mode occurs so as to: drive the switch into substantially full conduction during most of the half-cycle which the switch is able to control; and drive the switch into non-conduction for a brief duration of time during that same half-cycle so as to prevent a DC voltage component supplied to the load from exceeding a predetermined level below which excessive transformer heating does not occur, thereby minimizing overheating of the inductive load and enabling the power supply for the controller to be provided with sufficient voltage from the AC voltage source to enable the controller to continue to operate.
