A downward flow rotary filter comprises a series of circumferentially spaced cells 26, 27 rotating about a common vertical axis, the filtering floors 24, 25 of which are raised to level with the top of their peripheral walls at a discharge station where a plough or rotary scroll 23 moves the filter cake. The raising may be performed by electric, pneumatic or hydraulic means, or by extensions 15 from the floors running in tracks 22 which rise at the discharge stations. A common distribution valve (3), located at the axis, applies suction to the cells round most of their path from the slurry supply station, but delivers reverse flow air in two steps and applies suction again, to dry the filter cloth covering the perforate cell bases, where a cell passes the discharge station.
