Clamping and gripping pliers comprise a jaw 3 articulated to the handle 2 and to the handle 6 and spring loaded in the opening direction, an elbow-lever disposed between the handles 2, 6, and the elbow of which is supported against an adjusting screw 9 displaceable in the longitudinal direction of the handle 2 to permit adjustment of the minimum opening of the jaws 3, 1, a stop engageable with either the handle 2 or the adjusting screw for limiting closure of the handles, and a sliding catch clamping device for locking the handles in any gripping position of the jaws against the spring- loading of the jaws. The clamping device comprises a bar 11 which may be articulated to the elbow-lever, and whose end 13 passes through a slot 14 in the arm 15 of a double-arm lever spring-biased into locking engagement with the bar 11 which may be smooth, notched, or of other surface configuration.
