This invention proposes a Huffman Code Table (HCT) transform and a parallel Huffman decoding method based on this transformed HCT. The transformation of the HCT reorders the rows of the original HCT so that the codes are arranged in an ascending or descending order, and partitions it into a number of sub-bands, each respective sub-band containing codes of the same length. Two kinds of modification, namely bit removal or bit stuffing, may also be made to the reordered codes in the HCT in order to reduce the number of sub-bands of the reordered HCT. Incoming data is compared to threshold values for each sub-band to determine the correct sub-band for the data, and the correct entry for the incoming data is then found using the sub-band number and an offset code in each sub-band.
