Compressor

A compressor includes an electric motor (3) comprising a rotor (9) and a stator (10). The motor drives a rotary vane compressor (2). The rotor of the motor has one or more passages (11) extending through it, and tubes (12) are fitted into the lower ends of those passages. Each tube (12) is closed at its lower end (13) but has an opening (14) in the leading section of its curved wall. Tubes (12a) are fitted into the upper ends of the passages (11), and these tubes are open at the top end. When the rotor rotates, oil (15) in a sump (16), which is cooled by a pipe (17) containing liquid refrigerant, is forced up the tubes (12, 11, 12a) and emerges in a jet at the top. The bearing for the rotor shaft (9a) is thereby lubricated, and the winding (10a) of the stator of the electric motor are also sprayed with oil. A sliding-vane type compressor has a rotor (1) comprising a stack of at least two cylindrical pieces (1a,1b) of the same diameter as each other. The pieces may be mounted on a shaft at (6) and secured thereon by splines or keys. Tooling costs are thus reduced when a range of compressors of differing lengths is produced since for each length the rotor can be made by assembling an appropriate number of pieces of similar or dissimilar lengths.
