A distributed peripheral control system is provided for controlling the interaction between an information device 20, e.g. a PDA or mobile phone, and a peripheral device 28, e.g. a printer, scanner or camera. Peripheral 28 communicates with information device 20 which, in turn, communicates with a server 30. Information identifying the peripheral 28 is sent from the peripheral 28 to the information device 20 and onward to the server 30. In response to this information, server 30 selects a driver from driver database 34. Information device 20 may then send a print or scan request to 30 server. Upon receipt of such a request server 30 uses the driver selected, and any applications necessary, to perform peripheral-device dependent operations on behalf of the information device 20. For example, the sever 30 controls peripheral device 28, via information device 20, in order to print or scan a document.
