The downstream end (46) of the upstream base part (43) is supported on a pair of first resilient mounting members (59) and the upstream end (50) of the downstream base part (44) is supported on a pair of second resilient support members (85) through a pair of carrier arms (78) which are pivotal about a transversely extending carrier pivot axis (74). The resilience of the first and second resilient support members (59) and (85) is such that on the force with which crop material is being urged by the feed rotor 34 against the upstream and downstream base parts (43) and (44) exceeding respective first and second predefined values, the first and second resilient support members (59) and (85) yield, thereby permitting downward displacement of the downstream end (46) of the upstream base part (43) and the upstream end (50) of the downstream base part (44) in order to permit crop material to pass through the conveying channel (28) without becoming jammed between the feed rotor (34) and the upstream and downstream base parts (43) and (44).

A pull cord (39) connected to the retaining pin (32) releases the retaining pin (32) for releasing the second spigot (22) from the cocked position. A spent roll (4) is removed from the holder (15) by manually urging the empty reel (20) upwardly against the second spigot (22) for urging the second spigot (22) into the cocked position where it is retained by the retaining pin (32). The spent reel is then removed. A new roll placed on the first spigot (19) is aligned with the second spigot (22), which is released. The pull cord (39) is pulled from the cocked position by the pull cord (39) for engaging the new roll (4).

A fixed chamber baler (1) having a bale forming chamber (12) within which a bale (2) of silage is formed and circumferentially wrapped with wrapping film (3) comprises a system for controlling the degree of stretch in the feed direction of the wrapping film (3) with which the bale (2) is wrapped. The system comprises a first rotary encoder (51) for monitoring the rotational speed of a bale rotating roller (18e) of the baler (1), and a second rotary encoder (54) for monitoring the rotational speed of a tensioning roller (32) for tensioning the wrapping film (3). A microprocessor (56) from signals read from the first and second rotary encoders (51,54) computes the ratio of the difference of the linear speeds of the wrapping film (3) adjacent the rotating bale (2) and the tensioning roller (32) to the linear speed of the wrapping film (3) adjacent the tensioning roller (32), which is the value of the degree of stretch being induced in the wrapping film (3) as it is being wrapped onto the bale (2). A torsional load applied to the tensioning roller (32) is varied for varying the rotational speed of the tensioning roller (32) until the degree of stretch with which the wrapping film (3) is being applied to the rotating bale (2) equals a predefined degree of stretch stored in the microprocessor (56).

A roller baler (3) comprises a chassis (5) and a fixed segment (14) rigidly secured to the chassis (5), a tipping segment (15) and a closure segment (16), each of which carry a plurality of bale rotating rollers (17, 18, 19) which define a bale chamber (22), within which a bale is rotated, pressed and formed to a selectable bale density. The closure segment (16) is pivotal about a main pivot axis (35) from a closed state to an open state for accommodating a bale from the bale chamber (22). An infeed system (12) picks up crop material and feeds the crop material into the bale chamber (22). A pair of main double-acting hydraulic rams (40) acting between the chassis (5) and the closure segment (16) operate the closure segment (16) between the closed state and the open state, and apply pressure to the bale being formed in the bale chamber (22) for forming the bale to the selected bale density. A pressure regulator (54) controls the pressure of hydraulic fluid applied to the main rams (40) at a selectable density pressure for controlling the pressure applied by the main rams (40) to the closure segment (16). A microcontroller (50) controls the pressure regulator (54) to reduce the pressure of the hydraulic fluid applied to the main rams (40) in response to a blockage occurring in the infeed system (12), so that on restarting the baler, the power drawn by the baler to rotate the bale is reduced, thereby increasing the available power to the infeed system (12) to clear the blockage therein.

A fixed chamber baler (2) comprises a bale chamber (10) defined by bale rotating rollers (17) driven by a drive transmission system (49) comprising a driven sprocket (50) driving first and second driven sprockets (52, 54) by a main drive chain (53). A tensioning sprocket (80) carried on a pivotally mounted carrier arm (83) is urged by a tension spring (95) into engagement with a slack leg (84) of a main drive chain (53). An angle sensor (105) coupled by a link member (107) to the carrier arm (83) monitors the angular displacement of the carrier arm (83) from a datum position and produces a signal indicative of the angular displacement of the carrier arm (83) from the datum position. The microcontroller is programmed to determine the power being drawn by the bale rotating rollers (17) to rotate the material in the bale chamber (10) from the degree of elastic stretch in the main drive chain (53) from an equation y = m<sub>1</sub>x + c<sub>1</sub> where y is the value of the power and x is the value of the signal read from the angle sensor (105) and m<sub>1</sub> and c<sub>1</sub> are constants determined empirically. The current quantity of material in the bale chamber (10) is determined from a linear equation, a power law equation or a polynomial equation. The optimum ground speed of the baler is determined by multiplying the current ground speed by the optimum rate at which crop material should be delivered into the bale chamber (10), and dividing the product by the current rate at which the crop material is being delivered into the bale chamber (10).

An angle sensor (105) coupled to the carrier arm (83) by a linkage (107) monitors the angular displacement of the carrier arm (83) about the main pivot axis (89) from a datum position and produces signals indicative of the angular displacement of the carrier arm (83) from the datum position thereof. A look-up table is stored in the memory of a microcontroller comprising a plurality of values of the signal produced by the angle sensor (105) cross-referenced with corresponding degrees of stretch of the main drive chain (53), from which the degree of stretch of the main drive chain (53) is determined.

On the bale being formed to the desired bale density, the bale is circumferentially wrapped in the bale chamber (19). In order to increase the bale density during circumferential wrapping of the bale in the bale chamber (19), the pressure of the hydraulic fluid applied to the rams (40) is cycled between the hydraulic density pressure, and a higher pressure, which is either the baler hydraulic system pressure or the hydraulic system pressure of a tractor at which hydraulic fluid is supplied to the baler (3) during towing thereof by the tractor.

A feeding system for feeding wrapping material (26) into a bale chamber (15) of a fixed chamber roller baler (1) for circumferentially wrapping a round bale therein whereby the wrapping material (26) is fed from a roll (25) thereof through primary feed and pinch rollers (30, 31). The wrapping material (26) is drawn from the roll (25) by the primary feed and pinch rollers (30, 31) through a tensioning system (50) comprising spaced apart parallel non-rotatable first and second tensioning shafts (51, 53) of circular transverse cross-section. The first tensioning shaft (51) is carried on a pair of carrier members (55) pivotal about a pivot axis (57) defined by the second tensioning shaft (53) for adjusting the degree of tension induced in the wrapping material by the tensioning system (50). By pivoting the first tensioning shaft (51) in the direction of the arrow C about the pivot axis (57), the angular distances around the first and second tensioning shafts (51, 53) engaged by the net wrapping material (26) increases, thereby increasing the tension induced in the net wrapping material (26). A secondary feed roller (64) engaging an outer surface (66) of the roll (25) of wrapping material (26) rotates the roll (25) to simultaneously dispense wrapping material (26) therefrom when the primary feed roller (30) is operating to feed the wrapping material (26) into the bale chamber (15) to reduce tension induced in the wrapping material (26) by the tensioning system (50).

A roller baler (4) comprises a fixed part (10) and a rear door (12) both carrying a plurality of bale rotating rollers (17) which define a bale chamber (18). The rear door (12) is pivotally coupled to the fixed part (10) about an upper pivot axis (8). Double-acting hydraulic rams (25) operate the rear door (12) between a closed state defining the bale chamber (18) and an open state for discharge of a bale therefrom. Pressurised hydraulic fluid from a pressurised hydraulic fluid source (40) of a tractor (2) is supplied through a main three-state spool valve (42) of the tractor (2) to the rams (25) through first and second hydraulic circuits (50, 55). Hydraulic fluid is applied to the rams (25) through the first hydraulic circuit (50) for urging the rear door (12) from the open state to the closed state. When the main valve (42) is in a third state isolating the first and second hydraulic circuits (50, 55) from the pressurised hydraulic fluid source (40), hydraulic fluid is accommodated from the first hydraulic circuit (50) to a primary accumulator (69) of a pressure reducing circuit (68) through the primary valve (70) until the pressure in the first hydraulic circuit (50) is at a selected one of a plurality of selectable hydraulic pressures, so that the rams (25) urge the rear door (12) into the closed state at the selected hydraulic pressure to produce the bales to a corresponding selected bale density. The primary valve (70) is operated under the control of a microcontroller (64), and the selected hydraulic pressure is transmitted to the microcontroller (64) from a control console (65) located in the cab (3) of the tractor (2).
