A grit removal system with an annular grit removal chamber 22 and a central hopper (24, Fig. 2) beneath the chamber bottom, including an opening through the chamber bottom to the hopper. Influent and effluent channels 60, 80 direct wastewater into and out of the grit removal chamber. A plate 30 over the chamber bottom opening has a first portion (30a, Fig. 4) with a plurality of first openings 34 therethrough and a second portion (30b, Fig. 4) with a plurality of second openings 35 therethrough. The flow velocity for a given flow rate through the first openings is greater than through the second openings. In one aspect, the plate portions are split along a line and the first openings have a size, shape and/or number different than the size, shape or number of the second openings. The wastewater carries grit inwardly toward the plate whereby the flow path for grit passes over the plate so that a majority of grit flowing into the central hopper from the grit removal chamber passes through the first openings. In a further aspect, the area of each of the second openings is greater than the area of each of the first openings.

A blade (40) for an apparatus for introducing gas into a large body of liquid is disclosed. The apparatus includes a submergible hub on a rotatable shaft, the hub having radially directed connectors to which the blades are attached. A pressurized gas source is in communication with the connectors. The blade (40) comprises a longitudinal member (100), including a mount (104) adapted to secure the longitudinal member (100) to one of the connectors of the hub. The member (100) has a lower side when secured to a connector, a passage inside the member (100) is closed on one end (102) and is in communication with the pressurized gas source when secured to one of the connectors, and openings between the passage and the lower side of the longitudinal member (100). The longitudinal member (100) has a membrane (110) around it, the membrane (110) having perforations (120) located around and along the longitudinal member (100) and spaced from the longitudinal member openings (108) whereby the membrane substantially blocks the longitudinal member openings (108) when pressure in the longitudinal member (100) passage is no greater than the pressure outside the membrane (110).

The sensor has a sensing dome on an end of a cylindrical shaft extending into the priming chamber, with the dome having a vertical base having a diameter less than the cylindrical shaft diameter. The sensor signals a controller whether liquid is present based on an algorithm with settings for dampening of the electromagnetic field, conductance of the electric field, and/or permittivity of the magnetic field using settings which correlate to the fluid environment. The controller controls operation of the pump and primer based on the sensor signal.

Prior art problems include requiring a large footprint, presenting space problems in designing overall treatment facilities in which the grit removal devices are only a part. The larger devices are inherently more costly and can use more energy. The large devices are not well adapted as might be desired to operate efficiently in environments in which the flow rate varies widely. A grit removal unit including a cylindrical grit removal chamber above a grit storage chamber, with an opening to the grit storage chamber through the grit removal chamber bottom. At least one layer plate is an inverted truncated cone around the center axis which is spaced from the grit removal chamber vertical wall to allow fluid flow therebetween. Concentric inverted truncated cone lamella plates are supported in the grit removal chamber above the layered plates, with the lamella plates radially spaced from one another relative to the center axis. The girt removal unit also comprises a second layer plate between a first and third layer plate is adjacent the grit removal chamber vertical wall to substantially block fluid flow between the second layer plate and the grit removal chamber wall. The unit also comprises an influent opening in the grit removal chamber vertical wall below the layered plates allows fluid and grit into the grit removal chamber, and an effluent opening in the grit removal chamber vertical wall above the lamella plates allows fluid to exit the grit removal chamber.
