The control unit includes an external WDT to detect an abnormality of the MCU, a reset circuit to reset the MCU when the external WDT detects the abnormality of the MCU, and an ON/OFF control section to turn a gate of the semiconductor switching device on or off in accordance with the external WDT. The inverter is stopped by turning the gate off via the ON/OFF control section when the external WDT is a disable state. When the abnormality of the MCU is not detected in an enable state, the inverter is driven by turning the gate on via the ON/OFF control section. When the abnormality of the MCU is detected, the inverter is stopped by turning the gate off via the ON/OFF control section and the MCU is reset by the reset circuit.

The present invention relates to a recording apparatus, a recording method, a program, and a recording medium whereby data is reproduced from a two-layer optical disk that has yet to be formatted completely. A control section 51 divides a recording area of a layer L0 of the optical disk 33 into a plurality of recording regions and a recording area of a layer L1 of the same disk 33 into a plurality of recording regions at substantially the same physical positions as the recording regions of the layer L0. A control section 51 records the region where user-designated data was last written. The control section 51 controls a signal processing section 56 to write dummy data to the recording area of the layer L0 or L1 different from the layer that includes the region to which the user-designated data was last written. The signal processing section 56 is then controlled to write dummy data to the recording area of the layer containing the region where the user-designated data was last written, thus formatting the optical disk 33. This invention can be applied advantageously to the recording apparatus for recording data to optical disks.

The present invention provides an optical head apparatus for a magneto-optical recording medium. Furthermore, the Wollaston prism (66) is formed by adhering a pair of lithium niobate optical prisms (66a, 66b) to each other, in such a manner that the crystal optical axis of the prism on the side for light beam incidence of said reflected light beam from the recording surface is tilted at an angle of 45° with respect to the polarization plane of said reflected light beam from the recording surface (110), and that the crystal optical axis of the prism on the side for emitting said reflected light beam from the recording surface (110) is tilted at an angle of 90° with respect to the polarization plane of said reflected light beam from the recording surface (110).

A conventional signal generating circuit has a problem of being unable to compensate for an error of a chirp signal when V-F characteristics of a VCO change suddenly owing to disturbance. A signal generating circuit of the invention includes a control voltage setting unit (CVSU) configured to set a control voltage for a chirp signal using voltage-frequency characteristics indicating characteristics of an output frequency versus voltage; a VCO configured to alter the frequency of its output signal by the control voltage; a quadrature demodulator configured to perform quadrature demodulation of the output signal of the VCO to generate an inphase signal and a quadrature signal orthogonal to each other; and a frequency detector configured to detect the frequency of the output signal of the VCO on the basis of the inphase signal and quadrature signal. The CVSU corrects the control voltage by using the voltage-frequency characteristics derived from relationships between the control voltage and the frequency of the output signal of the VCO. The VCO generates the chirp signal based on the control voltage corrected by the CVSU.
