The present invention relates to engineering plants to express higher levels than endogenous amounts of terpenoids, such as farnesene. Following verification of trait stability over several generations, markers and marker cassettes were defined as being uniquely present in the developed sesame lines. The resulting high yield, shatter-resistant sesame lines can be used to increase sesame yield for its various uses.

Also provided are isolated nucleotide sequences comprising promoters that drive expression in a plant in an inducible or tissue-preferred manner. The nucleotide sequences find use in increasing the resistance of plants to pathogens and other stresses, modifying ABA metabolism in plants, modifying amino acid transport and content in plants, and regulating gene expression in plants. Additionally provided are isolated proteins, and transformed plants and seeds thereof.

Phenotypic and genotypic analysis of many sesame varieties was performed to derive markers for phenotypic traits that contribute to high yield, and a breeding simulation was used to identify the most common and most stable markers. Examples for such phenotypic traits include the number of capsules per leaf axil, the capsule length, the height to first capsule and the number of lateral shoots. Following verification of trait stability over several generations, markers and marker cassettes were defined as being uniquely present in the developed sesame lines. The resulting high yield, shatter-resistant sesame lines can be used to increase sesame yield for its various uses.

Chickpea plants with high protein content, low fat and/or modified protein composition are provided, as well as progeny or parts thereof. Phenotypic and genotypic analysis of many chickpea varieties were performed to derive markers for phenotypic traits that contribute to high protein content, low fat and/or modified protein composition, and a breeding simulation was used to identify the most common and most stable markers. Examples of such phenotypic traits include the protein content, the fat content as measured by near infrared spectroscopy, and protein composition and seed color traits. Following verification of trait stability over several generations, markers and marker cassettes comprising at least three specific QTLs were defined as being uniquely present in the developed chickpea lines. The resulting chickpea lines can be used to improve nutritional and organoleptic properties of various chickpea products and chickpea-based food ingredients, e.g., in plant-based protein products.
