An optical diode 103 has a circular polarisation splitter 107, a first circular polariser 109 and a second circular polariser 111. The circular polarisation splitter is arranged to receive at least partially unpolarised light 153 and output right-handed circular polarised light 155 along a first optical path and left-handed circular polarised light 157 along a second optical path. The first circular polariser is arranged on the first optical path and transmits right-handed circular polarised light and reflects left-handed circular polarised light. The second circular polariser is arranged on the second optical path and transmits left-handed circular polarised light and reflects right-handed circular polarised light. The diode may comprise an optical metamaterial with a negative dielectric permittivity and may be made from liquid crystal molecules in a cholesteric or helical arrangement. The diode may be used in a photovoltaic device.

A device is arranged to couple with an electromagnetic source 401, such as an LED light source to increase luminous efficiency. The device comprises a first optical metamaterial arranged to increase the intensity of radiation at a predetermined wavelength. The optical meta material has a periodic reflective component 405 having a dimension no greater than the predetermined wavelength. The periodic reflective component may comprise a regular planar grid or array of metal reflectors on a dielectric support. The LED may be mounted on a reflective surface 403 and the metamaterial may include a fluorescent phosphor material to convert radiation at the predetermined wavelength to a visible wavelength. A second optical metamaterial arranged to increase the intensity of radiation at a second wavelength may be layered on the first metamaterial.
