Two datum platforms C1 are inserted into the trochanther of the femur and acetabulum. From these platforms a measuring gauge C3,4,5 defines the original centre, orientation, length and angle of the femoral head and the acetabulum. The acetabulum is reamed and the implant inserted and orientated by reference to the original gauge setting. Its centre position is re-measured and recorded, producing a compensated position for the femoral head centre. The femoral head original position is produced on the gauge and with the compensated position being displayed by adjusting this gauge by the relevant dimensions indicated. Thereafter, throughout surgery, the gauge is used to select and position implant components and also surgical implements. The implant components selected determine the ream depth of the femur and by comparison to the femoral head gauge accurately position and orientate the implant.

A method of making casts of footprints, tyre marks or other impressions or marks which comprises: providing a watertight pack made of a flexible and substantially water-impermeable material and having two compartments enclosed therein separated by means which may be removed to allow the contents of the compartments to be mixed; one of said compartments containing Plaster of Paris or similar water-settable inorganic moulding material and the other containing water for setting the moulding material, or one of said compartments containing a room temperature - curable fluid silicone and the other containing a curing agent or accelerator for the silicone; removing the separating means and mixing the contents of the two compartments within the pack; dispensing the mixture from the pack into or onto the impression or mark and allowing the mixture to set to form a cast.
