Electrodepositable stable coating preparation essentially comprising a synthetic resin (A), which contains amino groups and, if appropriate, hydroxyl groups, a hardener (B) which is capable of transesterification and/or transamidation, water as diluent (C), if appropriate, organic solvents (D), and also the conventional coating additives and, if appropriate, hardening catalysts (E), wherein the organic solvents content is a maximum of 10% by weight, relative to the solids content. The invention furthermore relates to a process for the preparation of this coating preparation, which is distinguished by a low organic solvents content with good storage stability.

A process for the preparation of copolymers containing hydroxyl groups by radical reaction of (A) 10 to 30% by weight of at least one glycidyl ester containing 12 to 14 carbon atoms, of an aliphatic saturated monocarboxylic acid with a tertiary or quaternary alpha -carbon atom; and (B) 90 to 70% by weight of at least two unsaturated copolymerisable monomers, at least one of which contains at least one carboxyl group, wherein component (A) is introduced first to a reaction zone and is then reacted at a temperature of at least 140 DEG C. with component (B) and a radical initiator, the component (B) containing a monomer having carboxyl groups, wherein for the preparation of low-viscosity copolymers component (A) is reacted at 140 to 200 DEG C. by substance polymerisation until a degree of reaction of at least 95% is achieved, the component (B) containing at least 3.3% by weight of the monomer having carboxyl groups, and an article coated with a product of said process.

Process for preparing copolymers from esters of an unsaturated carboxylic acid with at least one other unsaturated monomer, characterized in that the following components are copolymerized in radical substance polymerization: (A) 5 to 60 parts by weight of at least one diester of an alpha , beta -olefinically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid having 1 to 8 carbon atoms in the ester group, (B) 10 to 70 parts by weight of at least one vinyl aromatic hydrocarbon having one vinyl group, (C) 0 to 30 parts by weight of at least one glycidyl ester of an aliphatic saturated monocarboxylic acid branched in the alpha -position, (D) 0 to 50 parts by weight of at least one ester, amide and/or anhydride of an alpha , beta -olefinically unsaturated mono- and/or dicarboxylic acid, (E) 0 to 40 parts by weight of at least one alpha , beta -olefinically unsaturated monocarboxylic acid, the sum of components (A) to (E) being 100 parts by weight, whilst at least a part of component (A) is at first introduced into the reaction vessel alone or in combination with at least a part of component (C) and a mixture of component (B) with at least one of components (D) and (E) and any remaining parts of components (A) and/or (C) is added in batches at 140 DEG to 200 DEG C. together with a radical initiator, alone or in conjunction with a regulator, and if component (C) is present, at least an equimolar quantity of component (E) is used; and the use of the products thus obtained as binders for the preparation of coating compositions.

A curing agent (A) containing active CH groups is characterised in that it contains at least two groups of the formula (I) <IMAGE> or structural units of the formula (I') or (I") <IMAGE> in which A is <IMAGE> X and Y are identical or different and are <IMAGE> CO2R<1>, CN, NO2, CONH2, CONR<1>H or CONR<1>R<1>, where the radicals R<1> may be identical or different and are hydrocarbon radicals, preferably alkyl radicals having 1 to 12 carbon atoms, which may also be interrupted by oxygen or an N-alkyl radical, with the proviso that only one of the two radicals X and Y may be an NO2 group; A' is <IMAGE> X' and Y' are identical or different and are <IMAGE> Curable mixtures of (A) and a Michael acceptor (B) and optionally diluents and conventional additives cure rapidly even at low temperatures and are particularly suitable for surface-coating compositions.
