A main air conduit for drying grain heaped thereover, comprises an inner wall provided with air outlets and an outer perforated wall. As shown, conduit 14 of triangular cross-section is made up of sections 21 and comprises inner wooden panels 24 provided with air outlets 28 having doors 27 for directing and/or varying the flow of air to the grain and outer perforated metal sheets 16. The conduit has an opening 33 at one end communicating with a fan for supplying air under pressure to the conduit.

In a method of drying grain the grain (e.g. from a harvester) supplied by elevator 13 and hopper 12, is conveyed along channel 22 by flighted conveyer 11 and discharged from the end of channel 22 to form a heap about air conduit 14 extending centrally through the drying building, the height of heap being such that the resistance to airflow in the heap is greater in the vertical direction than in the horizontal direction and air pressurized by fan 17 is passed laterally out of the conduit 14 and through the heap. The grain in freely falling from the end of channel 22, is initially free to form a heap, the upper surface of which assumes its natural angle of repose. When the heap reaches the height of channel 22, the grain is dragged along the upper surface of the heap by conveyer 11 and freely slides down the forward side slopes of the heap. A thrust wall for a building in which grain is dried comprises an inner perforated surface and an outer imperforate surface, the space between the surfaces being open to atmosphere such that it can act as an exhaust for the drying air. The wall may comprise a corrugated sheet between inner and outer sheets of light construction. As shown, the wall comprises inner perforated overlapping sheets 21 and outer corrugated sheets 22, the corrugations providing flues 23. The sheets 22 are secured to stanchions 24 by cleats 26 and the lengths of the wall between stanchions are secured at their tops to inverted channel sections 28.
