A wireless network using nodes that perform both distribution and backhaul functions is provided. A plurality of gas flow control units in cabinets are connected to distribute process gas, on demand, to a plurality of utilization locations known as "tool" locations in a semi-conductor manufacturing plant. Each gas flow control unit is connected to a single tool interface controller over a single communications cable. The status and operational characteristics of the individual units are communicated through the tool interface controller to a supervisory control computer by means of polling. Each flow control cabinet has its own data processor, and can be operated alone. Also, the supervisory computer can be used to operate each cabinet, as well as to monitor operations of the system. Gas demand and other signals are communicated from each tool location to the control units through a single cable connected to the interface controller, thus reducing the original wiring cost. Changing the communications path to accompany a change of the tool to which a given conduit in one of the cabinets delivers its gas can be done quickly, in software, with a few keystrokes. Mechanical re-wiring is not needed.

A microsystem platform comprises a substrate in the form of a disc, which has a first flat, planar surface (31) comprising a multiplicity of microchannels and at least one sample input means (11) embedded therein. The hip cup of this invention includes a porous metal outer shell, preferably formed from fiber metal, and a compression molded polyethylene component defining an articulating surface at its center for contact with a prosthetic femoral head. The porous outer shell is placed within a mold and the polyethylene component is compression molded within the shell. To prevent the porous shell from collapsing or distorting about its equatorial edge (and thereby distorting the articulating surface) a constraining ring is fitted over the edge of the shell prior to the molding of the polyethylene component. The ring is held in contact with the shell by the molded polyethylene. The constraining ring prevents the edges of the shell from radially distorting during impaction into a prepared acetabulum or during use.

A system and method is disclosed that compresses and decompresses images. The compression system and method includes an encoder which compresses images and stores such compressed images in a unique file format, and a decoder which decompresses images. The encoder optimizes the encoding process to accommodate different image types with fuzzy logic methods that automatically analyze and decompose a source image, classify its components, select the optimal compression method for each component, and determine the optimal parameters of the selected compression methods. The encoding methods include: a Reed Spline Filter, a discrete cosine transform, a differential pulse code modulator, an enhancement analyzer, an adaptive vector quantizer and a channel encoder to generate a plurality of data segments that contain the compressed image. The plurality of data segments are layered in the compressed file to optimize the decoding process. The first layer allows the decoder to display the compressed image as a miniature or a coarse quality full sized image, the decoder then adds additional detail and sharpness to the displayed image as each new layer is received. The decoder uses optimal decompression methods to expand the compressed image file.

A master oscillator and power amplifier configuration for a high power cladding- pumped laser structure, and a method of making same, is disclosed. The laser structure comprises a single mode core having at least one oscillator defined therein, and a first and second cladding layer for waveguiding and radiation retention. The core is doped with refractive-index modifying dopants, in addition to ionized rare earth elements. The refractive-index modifying dopants facilitate writing one or more spaced pairs of index gratings in the core, each pair defining an oscillator. Oscillator cavity length is determined by the desired mode spacing and is less than one-half of the single mode core length. The index gratings are formed via a ultraviolet light-induced refractive index change in the core, which index change varies periodically along the core. The periodic variation is created by projecting an interference pattern on the core.

Embodiments described herein provide for a four-channel Wireless Data Concentrator (WDC) for a data network of an aircraft. A method of reacting a first compound to produce a second compound includes the step of contacting a first non-fluorous phase including the first compound with a first fluorous phase at a first phase interface. The first compound distributes between the first fluorous phase and the first non-fluorous phase. The method further includes the steps of contacting the first fluorous phase with a second non-fluorous phase at a second phase interface and including at least a third compound in the second non-fluorous phase that reacts with the first compound to produce the second compound. The second compound has a distribution coefficient less than the first compound. This method can, for example be used to separate the second compound from unreacted first compound wherein, for example, the first compound is of a fluorous nature and distributes more readily into (or transports more quickly through) the fluorous phase than does the second compound. In general, the fluorous phase serves as a barrier to prevent the two non-fluorous phases from mixing, but molecules that can migrate through the fluorous phase can pass from one side to the other.

A WDM communication system utilizes a pump-mediated gain-shaped fiber amplifier having a predetermined nominal signal gain bandwidth and is pumped by a plurality of laser pump sources having different wavelength outputs with their outputs combined to provide a scaled power output of a weighted average of their wavelengths for launching into at least one end of the fiber amplifier. The weighted average of the output wavelengths of the individual sources is varied to produced a modified weighted average that broadens the predetermined nominal signal gain bandwidth. The wavelength weighted average of the combined pump sources may be modified by changing the operation of at least one of the pump laser sources, e.g., by changing the power level or the temperature level of one or more of the individual pump sources or by terminating the operation of one or of the individual pump sources. The amplifier may then be employed in a multiple channel DWDM communication system with broadened signal gain bandwidth permitting the expansion of the number of possible communication channels utilized with the amplifier.

A plurality of gas flow control units in cabinets are connected to distribute process gas, on demand, to a plurality of utilization locations known as "tool" locations in a semi-conductor manufacturing plant. Each gas flow control unit is connected to a single tool interface controller over a single communications cable. The status and operational characteristics of the individual units are communicated through the tool interface controller to a supervisory control computer by means of polling. Each flow control cabinet has its own data processor, and can be operated alone. Also, the supervisory computer can be used to operate each cabinet, as well as to monitor operations of the system. Gas demand and other signals are communicated from each tool locations to the control units through a single cable connected to the interface controller, thusreducing the original wiring cost. Changing the communications path to accompany a change of the tool to which a given conduit in one of the cabinets delivers its gas can be done quickly, in software, with a few keystrokes. Mechanical re-wiring is not needed.
