The invention relates to an exhaust emission control device for internal combustion engines operated with leaded and/or unleaded fuel. Since in the current situation a transitional phase is to be anticipated in the case of motor vehicles, in which both leaded and unleaded fuel is used, this means a considerable shortening of the service life of conventional catalytic converters. In order to increase this service life of conventional catalytic converters, a device is created in which due to cross-section continuity as flow ducts become smaller or whether or not there are internal cross-connections the greatest possible inherent activation coupled with the smallest possible pressure loss, is achieved and in addition there is a multi-stage filtration effect for solid particles, in which clogging is largely prevented.

A reaction vessel for chemical reactions at high temps. and pressures using a catalyst has internal and external vessels separated by an insulating jacket; the internal vessel is of high-temp. material, such as stainless steel, while the external vessel is of high pressure-resistant material, such as boiler plate. The inner vessel pref. contains a catalyst bed through which the gas or other medium flows vertically, the upper part of the wall having zones permeable to the gas in it or fixed to it. Pref. the outer vessel has a bursting disc in its top dome or a pipe connected to it. Used in particular for catalytic processes at temp. up to 1000 deg.C and pressures up to 200 bar. The outer vessel can be made of relatively inexpensive boiler plate or similar material, since it does not need to withstand the high temps.. The thermal insulation keeps the temp. of the outer vessel down to a max. of 300 deg.C.
