[Also in Division D1] An elastic thread is made by applying tension to a synthetic elastic thread so as to reduce its diameter, covering the elastic thread, while still under tension, with a single winding of non- elastic thread, and heating the covered thread while still in an extended state to set the elastic thread with the reduced diameter thereby to relieve pressure between the elastic thread and the covering. Preferably the core thread consists of fibres containing at least 85% by weight of segmented polyurethane. As shown, a core thread 1 from a package 2 is stretched between feed and draw rolls 3, 4 and a single winding of non-elastic thread 6 is applied from the spool 5.
