A method and system of forming large-diameter SiC single crystals suitable for fabricating high crystal quality SiC substrates of 100, 125, 150 and 200 mm in diameter are described. The SiC single crystals are grown by a seeded sublimation technique in the presence of a shallow radial temperature gradient. During SiC sublimation growth, a flux of SiC bearing vapors filtered from carbon particulates is substantially restricted to a central area of the surface of the seed crystal by a separation plate disposed between the seed crystal and a source of the SiC bearing vapors. The separation plate includes a first, substantially vapor-permeable part surrounded by a second, substantially non vapor-permeable part. The grown crystals have a flat or slightly convex growth interface. Large-diameter SiC wafers fabricated from the grown crystals exhibit low lattice curvature and low densities of crystal defects, such as stacking faults, inclusions, micropipes and dislocations.

Next, the mixture and the bulk carbon are heated to a second temperature that causes the elemental Si and the elemental C to react forming as-synthesized SiC inside of the crucible. The as-synthesized SiC and the bulk carbon are then heated in a way to cause the as-synthesized SiC to sublime and produce vapors that migrate into, condense on and react with the bulk carbon forming polycrystalline SiC material. 1. A video surveillance system is disclosed which readily distinguishes between changes within an observed scene, caused by the presence of an intruder within the scene, and changes resulting from lighting variations. The video surveillance system implements a retinex-based algorithm for distinguishing the presence of a new object within the scene from changes in scene lighting. Areas of change between a current image (F1) of the scene and a reference image (RF) thereof are identified to produce a difference image. Response to significant differences present in the difference image, the entire current image and a subsequent image (F2) are partitioned into uniform segments (SF1 1 -SF1 n , SF2 1 -SF2 n ), and ratios of changes in light intensity along the edges of the uniform segments are calculated for each partition. If a comparison of the resultant edge ratios between corresponding segments in the images indicates a change in the scene, the process is repeated for at least one subsequent image frame. If similar results are attained, the system signals an alarm condition to a monitoring station or a system operator.

A keyhole shaped opening is provided in each cell having a cavity of the blister layer. Each keyhole shaped opening includes an elongated, e.g., 3 mm linear, slit having a pair of ends and a hole, e.g., a 1 mm circular hole, at a first one of the pair of ends of the slit. Each keyhole shaped opening is located in its associated cell of the blister layer so that the first one of the ends of its slit is located adjacent but spaced by a small gap of a predetermined length, e.g., 1 mm, slightly from a perforated line forming an edge of the cell. In a method of forming polycrystalline SiC grain material, low-density, gas-permeable and vapor-permeable bulk carbon is positioned at a first location inside of a graphite crucible and a mixture of elemental silicon and elemental carbon is positioned at a second location. The mixture and the bulk carbon are heated to a first temperature below the melting point of the elemental Si to remove adsorbed gas, moisture and/or volatiles from the mixture and the bulk carbon. The mixture and bulk carbon are then heated to a second temperature that causes the elemental Si and the elemental C to react forming as-synthesized SiC inside of the crucible. The as-synthesized SiC and the bulk carbon are then heated in a way to cause the as-synthesized SiC to sublime and produce vapors that migrate into, condense on and react with the bulk carbon forming polycrystalline SiC material.

Disclosed is a handle clamp for an exothermic mold. The clamp includes a pair of legs, each having a plurality of rods that are shaped to fit into engagement holes on sections of the mold. The rods of each leg engage with one section of the mold. Engagement brackets are rotatably disposed on one or more or the rods. The brackets each have a thumb bolt that can be extended toward a mold section connected with the clamp. When engaged with the mold section, the thumb bolt stabilizes the mold section on the handle. A detent mechanism is provided between the bracket and the leg of the handle. The detent mechanism releaseably holds the bracket in one of a selected plurality of rotational positions with respect to the rod. By selecting different rotational positions for the brackets, the handle can be configured to engage with different configurations of mold. The thumb bolts that are biased toward the mold section by a spring. The bolts include a key that can be aligned or misaligned with a key slot on the bracket. By aligning the key with the key with the key slot, the bolt can be moved toward or away from the mold section under the biasing force of the spring. By misaligning the key and key slot, the bolt can be locked into engagement with the mold section or else held in a disengaged position.

The present invention relates to the use of water soluble or water dispersible polymers containing carboxyl groups, optionally in latent form, and side-chains of general formula (I) -X-Y-[-O-(-Alk-O) n -R] k as additives in mineral building materials, wherein X, Y, Alk, R, n and k have the meanings cited in claim 1. Said polymers can be obtained by polymerizing ethylenically unsaturated monomers in the presence of compounds containing phosphorus and, optionally, by additional polymer-analogous transformation. The invention further relates to the production of said polymers and the use thereof. Also described are polymers, which can be obtained by polymerizing aromatic vinyl compounds, olefins, cycloolefins and/or dienes, as D monomers and anhydrides of ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acids as E monomers and which can be used both as parent compounds for the above-mentioned polymers and as additives for mineral building materials.
