High frequency induction log for determining resistivity and dielectric constant of the earth

Номер: US4278941A
Автор: Robert Freedman
Принадлежит: Shell Oil Co

A method and apparatus for logging rock formations penetrated by a borehole to determine both the resistivity and dielectric constant of the formations. The apparatus comprises an induction logging tool having at least a transmitting coil and two receiver coils and operating in the radio frequency range from 20 to 60 megahertz. The method utilizes both the in-phase and out-of-phase, with respect to the transmitter current, voltage components which are measured at each receiver. The in-phase and out-of-phase voltage components are used to compute the phase shift between the voltage signals and the relative attenuation of the voltage amplitudes between the receivers. The phase shifts and relative attenuations are relatively insensitive to the borehole (e.g., borehole radius and drilling mud resistivity) and can be used as inputs into theoretically constructed nomograms to determine both the resistivity and dielectric constant of the formation. If the invasion of the drilling mud into the formation is not negligible then a tool with four spatially separated receiver coils is employed and the phase shifts and relative attenuations between the three adjacent pairs of receiver coils are computed from the in-phase and out-of-phase voltage components measured at each receiver. These data are used to determine the resistivity and dielectric constant of the invaded zone, the radius of the invaded zone, and the resistivity and dielectric constant of the non-invaded formation.

Switch for detecting tire pressure

Номер: US4126772A
Принадлежит: Individual

A vehicle tire gas mass sensor having a sealed cylinder containing a non-toxic and inert gas. The cylinder is sealed at one end with a diaphragm and contains a sealable plug at an opposite end for admitting the inert gas. Sealing is permanent after the introduction of gas. The diaphragm moves freely in response to pressure differential between the inside predetermined pressure of the inert gas and pressure existing in the environment in which sensor is installed. The sensor is defined by a first, second and third contacts which are responsive to diaphragm movement caused by pressure differentials in the cylinder. In turn opening and closing of the contacts actuates alarms for indicating such pressure differential. Equilibrium conditions as between the interior and environment of the sensor are reflected by the movement of diaphragm to compensate for temperature variation occurring at these locations.

Method and apparatus for measuring total nuclear magnetic resonance porosity

Номер: CA2232022A1
Принадлежит: Schlumberger Canada Ltd

A method and apparatus for measuring total nuclear magnetic resonance porosity of an earth formation traversed by a borehole is sensitive to fast relaxation times that can be associated with clay-bound water. The total porosity measurement includes, in addition to free fluid and capillary-bound porosity, the porosity of clay-bound water and microporosity. An oscillating magnetic field is produced within the borehole, according to a phase alternated sequence, such as the Carr-Purcell-Meiboom-Gill (CPMG) sequence or a similar pulse sequence, to induce signals in the volume of formation which are measurable by the NMR logging tool. A reduced echo spacing and improved signal-to-noise ratio allows the recovery of short T2 components. The spin echo signals are measured and a value is determined for each signal. The signal values are separated into a first set and a second set wherein the first set comprises the early-time echo signals and the second set comprises the remaining echo signals. The second set of echoes are sub-divided into a plurality of groups and a window sum value is generated for each group of the second set, thereby producing a plurality of window sums. An attribute of the formation is determined based upon the plurality of window sums and the value of each signal of the first set.

Method and apparatus for determining the in situ larmor frequency of a wellbore nmr tool to compensate for accumulation of magnetic material on the magnet housing of the tool

Номер: CA2117990C
Принадлежит: Schlumberger Canada Ltd

A system includes a wellbore tool disposed in a wellbore and a surface apparatus disposed at a surface of the wellbore. Prior to operating the tool to take an initial measurement, the wellbore tool is first calibrated to take into account magnetic junk which is magnetically attracted to and accumulated on a magnet housing of the tool. To calibrate the tool, a new tuning frequency, called the Larmor frequency, is determined, and the tool is tuned to the new Larmor frequency before taking an initial measurement. The wellbore tool and the surface apparatus each include a processing system. Each processing system includes a memory. A first part of a tuning frequency determination software is stored in the memory of the tool, and a second part of the tuning frequency determination software is stored in the memory of the surface apparatus. To determine the tuning frequency, the processing system in the wellbore tool initiates execution of the first part of the tuning frequency determination software. Results from this first execution are transmitted uphole to the surface apparatus. The processing system in the surface apparatus then initiates execution of the second part of the tuning frequency determination software. When this second execution is complete, the new tuning frequency, known as the Larmor frequency, is determined. The wellbore tool is then tuned to the new Larmor frequency.

Downhole Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Measurement

Номер: GB2445042A

A method for determining a property, for example diffusion, of a substance in a downhole measurement region includes the following steps: providing a static magnetic field having a static magnetic field gradient, due to inhomogeneity, in the measurement region. Applying, in the measurement region, a pulse sequence that includes a tipping pulse, a re-focusing pulse, and a pulsed field gradient pulse train. The pulsed field gradient pulse train includes two sets of at least two pulses, the first set before and the second set after the refocusing pulse. Each set has at least two pulses of opposite polarity applied. These corrective gradient pulses (the second and fourth pulse) allow for the cancellation of the component of the spin echoes related to the dot product of the static field gradient and the pulsed gradient. The value of the static gradient can be independently obtained so that pulsed field gradients can be successfully used in inhomogeneous fields.

A nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) logging system includes a NMR logging tool adapted to be disposed in a borehole and a processing system adapted to be disposed on the surface of the borehole, the logging tool including a microcomputer, the processing system including a computer; and a signal processing system in accordance with the present invention having a first part stored in the downhole microcomputer of the logging tool and a second part stored in the surface oriented computer of the processing system. In the downhole microcomputer, using the first part of the signal processing system, a plurality of signal plus noise amplitudes are produced from a set of measured spin echo data, and a plurality N w of the window sums I m ,m+1 are produced from the signal plus noise ampltudes, the window sums being transmitted uphole to the processing system. By producing the window sums, the first part of the signal processing system compresses and eliminates redundant information from the measured spin echo data. In the surface oriented processing system, using the second part of the signal processing system, the plurality N w of the window sums I m ,m+1 are used to generate new data which is ultimately recorded on a new output record medium. Spectral amplitudes {a l }, determined from the window sums, are used by the processing system to compute three log outputs and signal distributions presented as color maps. Three standard deviations are also computed. Log quality curves including signal phase and RMS noise are also computed.

Determining the larmor frequency for nmr tools

Номер: WO2011119528A2

The Larmor frequency for an in situ nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) tool is determined and used to acquire NMR data. An NMR tool is provided and placed in situ, for example, in a wellbore. An initial estimate of the Larmor frequency for the in situ NMR tool is made and NMR data are acquired using the in situ NMR tool. A spectral analysis is performed on the NMR data, or optionally, the NMR data are digitized and a discrete Fourier transform (DFT) is performed on the digitized NMR data. The modal frequency of the spectral analysis or DFT is determined, and the Larmor frequency for the in situ NMR tool is determined using the modal frequency. The NMR tool is modified to transmit at the determined Larmor frequency and then used to acquire further NMR data.
