Perpendicular Pole Head for Servo Writing Magnetic Media

The present disclosure relates to a perpendicular pole head for creating a perpendicular magnetic moment in a concentrated pattern for writing the pattern on perpendicular magnetic media, such as BaFe based media. The pole head can have flux concentrators in the shape of the written pattern, which can be repeatedly applied to a moving magnetic medium to create a timing pattern on the media, e.g., a servo timing pattern. 1. A perpendicular write head , comprising:a primary write head configured to generate a magnetic field approximately perpendicular to a surface of the head; anda concentrator on the surface configured to concentrate the magnetic field in a pattern.2. The perpendicular write head of claim 1 , where the concentrator includes at least two servo stripes disposed at an angle with respect to each other.3. The perpendicular write head of claim 1 , wherein the magnetic field is concentrated in a medium by the concentrator such that the concentrated magnetic field is >110% of a coercivity of the medium claim 1 , and wherein the magnetic field generated by the primary write head is <90% of the coercivity of the medium claim 1 , absent the concentrator.4. The perpendicular write head of claim 1 , wherein the concentrator is substantially disposed in one of a “\/” shape claim 1 , a “/\/” shape claim 1 , a “\/” shape claim 1 , or a “//\” shape.5. Patterns of this kind can be recorded on a magnetic medium using a recording head that includes a surface having a flux gap with a defined shape. The patterns may be verified with a verify head, having a surface with a flux gap with the defined shape or part of the defined shape. The verify head may include two or more ferromagnetic cores, with a flux gap associated with each core. Each core can independently verify part of the recorded pattern.

A yoke for supporting a magnetic recording core adjacent a moving recording tape is disclosed. The core has two major surfaces, two side walls, and upper and lower walls. Two wound wire coils are mounted to the core adjacent respective side walls and extend beyond the major surfaces. The yoke includes two opposed major surfaces and a front surface which defines a bearing surface for supporting the recording tape. A narrow slot is formed in the front surface to receive the core. The walls of the narrow slot stabilize the core along the length of the core adjacent the core upper wall. Relief pockets extend between the two major surfaces of the yoke and encompass at least a portion of the narrow slot. The relief pockets permit winding the coils around the core after the core is positioned in the yoke.
