A steering column assembly (20) for a motor vehicle is adjustable in both rake and telescope directions and then locked in a convenient setting by a driver. The locking mechanism (42) for the telescope and rake adjust is motor actuated in response to activation of a toggle switch (68). The motor (48) can be proximate or remote from the locking mechanism (42) and the steering column assembly (20). A transmission (60) operates on a rotating cam (62) principal which alternately cycles a clamp (46) of the locking mechanism (42) between locked and unlocked conditions. A drive shaft (54) extends between the motor (48) and the locking mechanism (42) and can be either rigid or flexible. Locking the steering column assembly (20) in an adjusted position can be accomplished either by compressing a capsule bracket (28) against a compression bracket (34), or via interlocking engagement of pawls (80, 82) with corresponding teeth (76, 78) in respective slots (36', 38') in the capsule (28') and compression (34') brackets.

Absolutpositionssensorsystem, das in eine Lenksäulenanordnung (200) eines Fahrzeugs (10) integriert ist, umfassend:ein längliches Ziel (218), umfassend:eine schräge Deckfläche (508);eine Bodenfläche (512), die der Deckfläche (508) gegenüberliegt;eine erste bogenförmige Seitenfläche (514), die sich angrenzend zwischen einem Abschnitt der Deckfläche (508) und einem Abschnitt der Bodenfläche (512) befindet;eine zweite bogenförmige Seitenfläche (516), die sich angrenzend an und zwischen einem anderen Abschnitt der Deckfläche (508) und einem anderen Abschnitt der Bodenfläche (512) befindet, wobei die zweite bogenförmige Seitenfläche (516) der ersten bogenförmigen Seitenfläche (514) gegenüberliegt; undeine Anbringungseinrichtung (510) zum Verbinden des länglichen Ziels (218) mit einem bewegbaren Teil der Lenksäulenanordnung (200); undeine Sensorvorrichtung (214), umfassend:eine Anbringungseinrichtung (506) zum Verbinden der Sensorvorrichtung (214) mit einem stationären Teil der Lenksäulenanordnung (200); undeinen Sensor (502), der sich über der schrägen Deckfläche (508) des länglichen Ziels (218) befindet, wobei der Sensor (502) eingerichtet ist zum:Erfassen einer Position des länglichen Ziels (218) relativ zu dem Sensor (502), wobei die Position des länglichen Ziels (218) einer Position einer Lenksäule der Lenksäulenanordnung (200) entspricht; undErzeugen, für eine zum Überwachen einer Positionierung der Lenksäule eingerichtete Steuerung (212), eines Signals, das die Position der Lenksäule angibt.
