The method involves supplying fuel mixture to a cylinder of an internal combustion engine, and igniting the fuel mixture with ignition spark of a spark plug. The composition of the fuel mixture is determined from ignition voltage at the spark plug and/or from combustion duration of the ignition spark. An ignition angle, cylinder charging, lambda value, temperature and/or speed of the combustion engine and/or position of a charge movement device are considered as a working point parameter for determining the composition of the fuel mixture. An independent claim is also included for a device for determining composition of fuel mixture comprising a measuring unit for determining ignition voltage at a spark plug.

The method involves operating an internal combustion engine with a fuel mixture of two fuels, and determining pressure in a fuel storage tank or a container associated with the storage tank. Composition of the fuel mixture is determined from the pressure and the temperature of the fuel mixture at the fuel storage tank or the container associated with the tank. The temperature of the fuel mixture is determined by a model based on temperature of internal combustion engine, vehicle speed and/or activity of a fuel pump. An independent claim is also included for a device for determining composition of a fuel mixture in a fuel storage tank for operating an internal combustion engine.
