An electric liquid heating appliance comprises a primary metal sheathed, higher power, heating means 100 for bringing the water to boil, a secondary, lower power, heating means (204, fig 5) for maintaining the liquid at boiling for a predetermined time, a boiling sensitive control for switching from the primary heating means 100 to the secondary heating means (204, fig 5) upon initial boiling of the liquid, and a 'timing heater' associated with a control (300, fig 6) for discontinuing boiling of the liquid after a predetermined time. The timing heater can be in the form of a thermally sensitive control (14, fig 1) responsive to the temperature of the secondary heating means (204, fig 5) or heating means associated therewith, such as a bimetallic strip 336 arranged thermally remote from the secondary heating means (204, fig 5), so that operating temperature of the bimetallic strip will not be reached for a predetermined period of time. The actuator 336 is preferably arranged at a spacing from the heating means and linked thereto by a thermal conduction member having a known thermal capacity. The secondary heating element (204, fig 5) preferably comprises a thick-film heating element having a timing section with which the actuator is associated. A tertiary heating means 206 may also be present having a keep hot function. Numerous other inventive concepts are also disclosed. Including the shape of the cross section of element 100.
