Zur Schließ- oder Öffnungserkennung ist ein vorzugsweise durch einen Magnetantrieb betätigtes Ventil (1) mit einem Schalter (22) versehen, der über einen an dem Anker (14) des Magnetantriebs federnd gelagerten Stößel (25) betätigt wird. Ein Anschlag beispielsweise in Form einer Ringschulter (27) und einer zugeordneten Fläche (32) begrenzt den Hub des Stößels (25) in Bezug auf den Endschalter (22). Vorzugsweise ist das Ventilverschlussglied (7) so ausgebildet, dass es den Gasfluss erst dann freigibt, wenn der Anker (14) bereits einen Teil seines Öffnungshubs durchlaufen hat. Der Ansprechpunkt des Schalters (22) wird in diesem ersten Teil des Öffnungshubs des Ankers (14) gelegt, in dem das Ventilverschlussglied (7) noch nicht öffnet. Die Hubbegrenzung des Stößels (25) zur Betätigung des Schalters (22) wird vorzugsweise ebenfalls in diesem Bereich des Öffnungshubs des Ankers (14) gelegt. Jedenfalls aber begrenzt der Anschlag den Hub des Stößels (25) unabhängig von der Größe des Öffnungshubs des Ankers (14), so dass ein und derselbe Schalter (22) bei unterschiedlichen Ventilen mit unterschiedlichen Nennweiten und Öffnungshüben eingesetzt werden kann. ABSTRACT The invention provides a monitor for monitoring the condition of fibre optic communication cables. The system employs one or more of the optical fibres of a cable to monitor the cable structure for damage or kinks. By using two separate laser sources and simultaneously monitoring the optical losses at two distinct and separate wavelengths, the loss signature of the monitored fibre is determined, analyzed and related to the mechanical condition of the cable structure. To monitor splice points for moisture, a special optical splice sensor unit detects any penetration of water into the splice and transmits a coded alarm signal over the monitored fibre to the optical receiver. Every splice location is assigned a unique sensor code. The optical splice sensor is driven by moisture detection cell, which forms a single cell water activated battery. Water entering the monitored splice closure wets the tape, which activates the cell. The cell generates sufficient voltage and current to power timing, code generation and modulator circuits in the sensor unit for an extended period of time. The activated circuit drives a modulator which modulates the light travelling down the fibre. The modulated light is monitored at the equipment office and the address of the alarming sensor decoded.

A container having a communication tube extended from it is easily and quickly filled or evacuated through a fitting which is swaged over the tube. Once the container is filled or evacuated, the fitting is swaged over the tube at a second location to seal the tube. The fitting has a barrel which is closed at one end and is further provided with a main bore which opens out of the other end and receives the tube. The mid-portion of the barrel is enlarged and a cross bore opens into the main bore at this enlarged mid-portion. Initially, the portion of the barrel between the enlarged mid-portion and the open end is swaged over the tube. Then the container is filled or evacuated through the cross bore which communicates with the interior or the container through the unswaged portion of the main bore and the tube. Thereafter, the portion of the barrel between the closed end and the enlarged mid-portion is swaged over the tube to seal the end of the tube. Finally, the cross bore is closed to provide seal redundancy.

A constant current termination is provided for cable locating tones on communication and control cables that may be buried or placed in underground duct structures. The constant current termination limits the current on each branch of the cable to that required for cable location, thus ensuring that branches furthest from the tone source have adequate current for location purposes. The termination is the same for each branch, regardless of its position along the cable system. This eliminates the need to calibrate and recalibrate termination distances for a cable on installation and when branches are added. It also allows the location of damaged cables where the tone signal strength on a damaged brat is less than that for which the termination was designed.
